Today Joseph, Jennifer Paul and i went for a drive to Waipu Cove. We walked along the beach a long way.....the water was cold but the sand was warm - and no rain. Then we had our picnic and watched all the surfers coming out of the water for their lunch. Then time for another paddle through the water and then a drive home before the rain came!... read more

Heute wollten wir das Nordland von Neuseeland erreichen. Auf dem Weg dorthin, machten wir noch einen kleinen Abstecher nach Waiomu. Hier konnten wir zu einem nahegelegenen Kauri-Wald wandern. Der Kauribaum ist die zweitgrößte Baumart der Welt und steht in Neuseeland unter Naturschutz. Die Bäume können bis zu 4000 Jahre alt werden und eine Höhe von 60 m erreichen. Der Wanderweg lag direkt an einem Bachlauf. Diesen mussten wir 7 mal überqueren. Um keine nassen Füße zu bekommen, mussten wir von Stein zu Stein springen, um ans andere Ufer zu gelangen. Fast trockenen Fußes kamen wir am großen Kauribaum am Ende des Wanderweges an. Es ist schon sehr beeindruckend, wenn man vor ihnen steht und das wahre Ausmaß eines solchen Baumes sieht. Hello every one, you may have heard that there was a huge earthquake in the South Island and we just wanted to let you know that we are very safe in the north of the North Island and having a great time! With all the recent stresses of getting our resiency application ready for immigration, a long weekend at the beach was calling. Waitangi Day, a public holiday, fell on a Friday this year and like many Kiwis, we decided to take advantage of the time off and head to the beach for a few days. We set off early and found the roads to be relatively deserted. Bliss. Just before we reached our destination, we stopped off at a so-called German Cafe and Motel just outside Wairewa. I was excited to see if there was any kind of bakery inside but was shocked to find not one single thing remotely German looking about the entire place!
