Alright since internet is so cheap here ($1 for 20 minutes) we headed back to get online so I think I'll write a little and then add to this post another day. So we came up to a little town called Orewa after leaving Hobbiton yesterday and we got in on our first traffic in a couple months. Going through Auckland (a city with 1/4 the population of NZ in it) it took us an hour and a half to get about 30 km so that was kind of a bummer but we didn't really have any pressing engagements as usual so it wasn't a big deal. Today we headed up the coast a little and did some hiking through a "dome forest" (we don't really know why it's called dome) and we stopped by a ... read more

Hello hello. Just to clarify, the animals in the bird sanctuary where all found injured and sick, so they would not be alive right now if not for people who care for them. Oh yeah and I completely forgot to thank Carol and Steve in my last blog for my Christmas present, the Hobbiton tour. Thank you :) Alright so today we did some hiking in the area just north or Orewa, which is about 60 km north of Auckland. The weather has been rainy and overcast the last few days, but very humid. The humid part is good because in a couple days we are going to be swimming with dolphins hopefully, and the warmer the better for me because I lack much in the way of body fat. We hiked through some dense ... read more

Ah yes, The Shire at last, for those of you who don't care about my nerdy adventures, this entire post will be about our visit to The Shire - you've been warned. Ok, so today we drove up from Waitomo and stopped in at Matamata which is where the tours of the Hobbiton movie set leave from. This was certainly the highlight of our day. The set is on a private, 1250 acre sheep farm and is only accessable through these tours. The farm itself is located on Buckland Rd. and that road has had that name for over 100 years (awesome coincidence not know when the location was chosen). So after Peter Jackson realized he had all of the filming he wanted for the trilogy he gave the instruction to destroy all of the sets ... read more

Ok then, back to the day-to-day stuff. When we left Nelson last week we headed toward Picton but this was a very short drive and the only thing in between the two towns was wine country. So we went wine tasting. This was wonderful and we couldn't figure out why we hadn't done it before. This area has tons of wineries, 25 within a 5 km radius, and is supposedly the place for some of the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. We stopped by a few of the more highly recommended wineries and were given tastes of a number of their wines. The people working the wineries were all very friendly and the wine was incredible. I haven't had much experience with good wines, but this was certainly some of the best wine I've ever ... read more

Well its been a while and after rumaging through the 117 emails in my inbox I finally get the chance to enter a blog. Life here is good. We have landed ourselves jobs as lifeguards working odd shifts and really not caring about it. Hey its work. We have been having training here and there as well as the odd emergency. No drownings yet though, just dislocations and the occasional scraped knee. Our trip up here was interesting to be honest with you, we slept rough for two of the three nights it took us to get here, spend one night in a hostel in Wellington. That should have been a good nights sleep. Only problem was we were told the england game was at 3 in the morning and at 3 found out its actually ... read more

After a flying visit to London and Edinburgh (Jane and Guys wedding was fantastic) I flew off to New Zealand...the flight is SO long, however I did have a surprise when I got upgraded to business class (if only for the two hour flight from Sydney to Auckland) - good to see how the other half lives! Of course my little nieces, sis and brother-in-law were awaiting my arrival as I came through customs with my bags full of chocolate and sweets!! Then it was straight off down to Taupo. Think I managed to stay awake for about an hour before I was asleep on Tamsin. Umm...the motel was ok and I bagged one of the double beds and heading straight for sleep - completely exhausted only to wake up with Tamsin snuggled into me, virtually ... read more

Picked up the van yesterday morning! The Kea Campers airport pick-up driver kindly collected us from the hotel and took us up to the Kea Depot. Sorted out all the paperwork in the office and got ourselves insurance for the van - vehicle insurance isn't compulsory in NZ; if you get hit by another driver, it's likely that they're not insured, and it means taking them to court for damages! Once we'd got the keys we headed off to the nearest retail centre to get bedding etc (the Kea staff had kindly left us a few bits and bobs in the van to start us off), and food supplies. As it was late afternoon by the time we'd stocked up, we headed to a nearby campsite in Orewa, just north of Auckland. The young receptionist at ... read more

----No pictures yet everyone, computers are being horrible, I will upload them soon!--- Well after 11 years I finally made it back to the place where me and the rest of my Veira clan spent all our time in New Zealand. This was going to be a big part of the trip for me as I remembered so much about the time we spent there. For those of you who don't know I will quickly explain. When I was 8 year old my old man was singing over here in New Zealand and he brought me, my mum and two brothers with him. We spent two months living in Orewa in a beautiful house, only 5 houses down from the one I was in this visit. So I was really looking forward to getting to ... read more
