We awoke in the morning to the news that The British and Irish Lions had triumphed in Sydney. We immediately celebrated with a lie-in. As todays activity had already been booked in advance, we were off to The Shire. We met the tour bus at “The Shires Rest Area”, a bespoke gift shop on the edge of a farm. In 2003, when scouting for locations for Hobbitton, Peter Jackson stumbled across a sheep farm outside Matamata. It was perfect. From “inside” the village, you can’t see any roads, buildings or power lines. However, what you do have is the lake, the party tree and rolling hills with the mountains in the background. Thus, it was chosen without further thought. Then in 2009, when filming on the Lord of the Rings trilogy finished, Jackson ordered, as per ... read more

Tuesday, 23rd April - Day Twenty: a day trip to “Hobbiton”. This is a day we arranged for ourselves especially so that we could visit The Shire, and see where the Hobbits lived. We had to book online at least 3 days in advance even though tours leave daily every half hour in winter. If we hadn’t lost our way in Cambridge we wouldn’t have missed the 10:00 trip, but got the one later and had time to look around the gift shop while we waited. Hobbiton is on a private farm. It was the actual movie setting for the trilogy of “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” and was the perfect place for the films with no buildings, roads or power lines to mar the beauty of the rolling hills. We picked the guys up a few hours later and they had a really really good time. After Picking the guys up we drove across country to the Maori Heartland of New Zealand that is Roturua.

Visited the film set used for the Hobbit houses in Lords of the Rings. Facinating tour info relating to Peter Jackson flying over the area and deciding it was perfect to represent middle earth. The set was used in all three films and is undergoing alterations for the Hobbit series. Anyone seeing the film will rember the characters houses, the party tree and the pub. Matamata, the nearest town was quaint and a good lunch stop.... read more

Hobbiton TODAY!!!!!!!!! We caught an early bus after a sucky walk with our back packs. We plan on ctching a bus to a small town called Matamata (which is near the sheep farm where they filmed LOTR and The Hobbit), then continuing on to a place called Rotorua, which has natural hot springs and geysers and such. But the most important thing about today is the freaking Shire, which I get to go to. Today was the first sunny, beautiful day we've had. We even had the whole back of the bus to ourselves, which takes me back to Grade 5 field trips when if you could claim the back seats on the bus, you were the coolest kid on the playground (as you can plainly tell, I rarely got to do that). The bus ride ... read more

headed out through the winding roads to Hot Water Beach......wow, what a spectacular drive! Anywhere that looks close on the map, takes a long time to get to........the roads are winding and up and down, but beautiful scenery is around every corner......arrived at Hot Water Beach where you can dig your own spa in the sand........but, if the tide is in, it's a no go........and guess what? tide was in......need to start checking those tidal charts! Anyway, the beach is beautiful, as are all of the beaches.........packed up and headed to Waihi Beach, not that far and wow! Tide was out and I could walk for miles.........check out the photos! Ended up driving in the dark, not something that I really was looking forward to, but it turned out fine........landed back at Mimi and Bill's around ... read more

The day had arrived. I am finally going to Hobbtion!!! As I finish with my breakfast duty onboard Celebrity Century me and some friends could't wait and get out from the ship :) We were in Tauranga, New Zealand that day. As soon as we walk out we stop by the info centre to ask for the Hobbition tours and how to get there. They told us that the movie scene is located in Matamata and the tour left early in the morning so it was the only one for the day….such a shame! I thought that there wouldn't be any other chance to see that place. The woman on the info centre than turn to Adrian and give him an option for a car rental. Since he used to have an international driver license without ... read more
