I spent the longest day of the year in Gisborne, an otherwise sleepy little surf town on the east coast. Not only was it daylight out until 9pm but it was beautiful sunny blue skies. I took another surf lesson, one-on-one from a place called Liquid Gold, which I would highly recommend. The coach, Paul "The Pom" Lungmuss, had me doing bottom turns and even got me up on a couple greens (which is the part of the wave before it breaks) whereas I had only been surfing whitewater (after the break) up to this point. I do think these waves with nice long breaks are a bit more forgiving, and I don't expect to have as much luck out on Long Island or the Jersey Shore. So it looks like I'm moving to Gisborne! Napier to Gisborne Written Saturday 20th December 2008 Captains Log: (Seafarers) Left Napier 1430hrs Sunday, 14 December with 55 litres of fuel on board and a forecast of 15 knot north easterlies. Headed due east for 9 hours at 5 knots. Went southeast around the bottom of the Portland Islands and set a northerly course for the next six hours. Arrived Gisborne 0900hrs Monday, 15 December. Entering Gisborne very easy with clear channel markers and plenty of water. Very small marina in the inner basin, mainly large game fishing boats. The wind never eventuated and died away to a force one. Motored entire way and finished with less than 12 litres of fuel. No 1’s version: (The bigger story) When you are a landlubber and have been for most of your life, terms like Hawkes Bay ... read more

The feeling of sadness left us quickly as we waved goodbye to the old folks at the airport. We were glad that they had decided to visit the South island as they had taken so much effort to get to NZ and it would have been a shame if they had not experienced the beauty of the other island. While we had a couple of days to ourselves we thought that we would spend them wisely and move further north, up the east coast away from Napier and head for the city of Gisborne. Now NZ has only one dual carridgeway, so traveling on the single track roads becomes very familiar. However the route upto Gisbourne was probably the worst road for both islands, it took us over four hours. The welcome sight of some surf ... read more

We've hit the highway again for our last spin around NZ. We went through Rotorua and saw a thermal park that we missed the first time 'round. We then headed South to Gisborne. This is the first city in the world to see the sunrise. Our first day there, Easter Sunday was a bit dreary so we headed to a hot springs. This was awesome, very natural. There were some pools that were a 5 minute walk through the rainforest. Duane had a contest with a nine year old boy to see who could stay in the cold pool the longest. He let the boy win, of course. The next day we crossed a biggie off our list and took a surf lesson. It was totally sweet! The sun started shining just as we started our ... read more

Finally reached Gisborne our next port of call Spent the day checking out the usual Captain Cook points of interest. Having done all that, we decided to have some fish and chips by the sea. (A really cheap meal in NZ). We'd just done eating when Skim spotted an old lady who'd fallen and was bleeding quite badly. Rushed over to see what could be done...... Her name was Margaret aged 87, she'd tripped over a stone. An ambulance was called for, but it didn't arrive until an hour and a half later. (Shame on you! Leaving an old lady waiting that long!!!!) We had offered to take her to hospital, but she refused saying "I'll get seen quicker if I go by ambulance, otherwise I'll be sat in the waiting room for hours". Fair ... read more

Hello Well I've been in NZ now for one month. So far so good. We did head off and leave for Rotorua. We only stayed there for one night. I think a big reason for that is because it was really commercial. (You weren't kidding Auntie Wendy) We could have stayed there and probably spent a crap load. We went to the Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland and it was pretty cool but we paid just under $30 for it and I don't really feel justified in paying that much for it. I just felt like I was getting ripped off, not to mention there were so so so many people there, and when there are that many people in one place It feels way too touristy and doesn't feel as special. Everyone had a camera and were ... read more
