This morning we awoke early as we had an early ‘visit from home’ with the arrival of the Oriana, whose home port is Southampton sailing right past our motorhome at the foot of Mount Maunganui. The ship was passing as we looked out of the windows from our comfortable bed at 7.30 pm, no doubt Mount Maunganui will be crowded today, it was so peaceful yesterday so glad we are moving on. Before we had breakfast we decided to walk around the base path of the mountain and by this time the Oriana was docked in the harbour at the edge of the mountain. We washed down the motorhome (still have some home chores to do!!) before we set off. We travelled through ‘Kiwi Fruit’ growing country with orchards all along the road side (the fruit ... read more

Eager to get on the road and see the country, I set off with two Dutch Hostel mates (Bo and Erwin) as they made their way south in a rental car bound for Queenstown. There were rumors of backpackers with cars to sell outside of the city on the cheap so I climbed into the Toyota Vitz (aka clown car)and we took off down the wrong side of the road! Haha The guys were pretty comical, all of Holland is basically flat so every hill we went over and every mountain we saw in the distance got a lot of laughing, clapping and high fives, all to the rhythm of German Techno. We drove thru Hamilton and stopped about 3 hours South of Auckland for a beer in Rotoroa. While we were there, our waitress keyed ... read more

Blog four; Omaha to Rotorua First off, my deepest apologies to our avid readership for a slight hiatus in postings. This is mainly due to the fact that where we are staying in Rotorua (deepest bush ie subtropical jungle) has not the faintaest mobile phone signal so my dongle is unproductive (no change there then!). But I am getting ahead of myself. Now, where was I? Oh yes, whilst still at Omaha, we met Carmel and Mark, Oliver and Anton at their lovely home, just outside Matakana, maybe 15ks from I&K, for an anteprandial libation then all went for a takeaway fish and chip (in New Zealand parlance, "fersh and cherp ”) supper on the beach at Snells Bay. Sadly, no photos of this event, though, as I forgot the camera. The next day, Zarema and ... read more

Kia Ora! Its Marie and Mike here, how are you all doing? Well I hope? As I type. It would seem that Spring has well and truly sprung...although its still seems really bizarre to me to see blossom on the trees and little duckling’s waddling about as we head into November! We’ve had a brilliant couple of weeks, and after working hard on some events at the Zoo we both decided we needed a break so we headed to Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo is an amazing region in the North Island, the lake itself was formed after a massive volcano eruption and truth be told it looks more like a sea then a lake, the only way that you would know your not on a shore is when you see a swan swimming past! There is ... read more

So I did manage some really fun waves in Taranaki and like many parts of the New Zealand coastline, accessing these waves can be more of a mission than pulling up in the car directly in front of your favourite break. My own little hideaway point involved a minor adventure. It starts out with a jaunt across some private farming land, then: "Gary, I think these fences are electrified." "Yes, but these sections here are packing tape and you can't put an electric current through pack... OUCH! OOO that smarts." Remembering the incident at Fox Glacier, Penny was careful not to overdo the laughing but still couldn't completely contain herself. So once again the karma Gods were smiling down upon me and barely 2 minutes later.... It's amazing how old cow dung can look so innocuous ... read more

On January 31st we stopped overnight in River Valley. This place was pretty much a disapointment since the only reason the bus stops there is so that people can go whitewater rafting but because the river was so low, there was no rafting to be done. So we pretty much just stayed in a lodge and sat around and did nothing for a day. The highlight of the stop was the farm roast dinner which was roast pork, yorkshire pudding, and a ton of veggies. We left there around noon today to drive to Wellington. Other than that, there isn't much to report. On the way to River Valley though we did stop in the Tongariro National park and went on a couple of short walks to a couple of nice waterfalls. We took some stunning ... read more

New Zealand temperatures range from sub-tropical in the north to temperate in the south. The main mountain ranges are a barrier to the prevailing westerlyl winds causing higher rainfall in the west. Remember, New Zealand is reversed-- warm northerlies come from the north and southerlies blow in from the Antarctic. Wear old shoes and a waterproof hairdo. You will get wet-- that's why they call New Zealand the Land of the Long White Cloud. Lyn RV in NZ Traveling New Zealand ... read more
