So we arrived in Cairns on April 17th and we're leaving here on the 25th to start our long journey back to Canada. We've both had an amazing time on this trip and have seen many wonderful things but we're really looking forward to coming home and getting back into the swing of things. Cairns is a pretty neat place - it's not too big and it's not too small (population 140,000) and the weather is amazing. We've been spending a lot of time at the lagoon (a free outdoor salt water swimming pool) and soaking in all the sunshine we can get before we get home. We went to the small town of Kuranda which is just north of Cairns by a scenic train and then came back on a gondola. The town was pretty ... read more

Hello everyone! We arrived in Mission Beach on April 13th and are leaving here tomorrow, April 17th. We haven't done too much while we've been here since there really isn't much to do. The hostel we're staying at is a 20 minute drive from the town itself and is in the middle of a rain forest. It's pretty cool because it looks like a tree house and it has a nice pool but it can be pretty boring since there's no TV and nothing to do other than lay by the pool (when it's not raining) and read. I guess the wildlife does provide a bit of entertainment though in a disgusting kind of way - there are millions of bugs in our hostel and they're all humongous. We've seen giant grasshoppers (at least as big ... read more

We arrived in Townsville late afternoon on April 11th to a hostel that seemed to have their kitchen in the garage. It was a bit odd, and made for a lot more ants than we normally have to deal with. On the 12th (Easter Sunday) we went to a market in the morning and got some jewellery, then caught the ferry to Magnetic Island for the afternoon. It was a very nice island, with lots of rainforest and secluded bays. Apparently there were a lot of shipwrecks around the coast of the island too, but you could only see them on dives because they were underwater. We had lunch at the most popular beach, Horseshoe Bay, and then after a slight mishap with the bus we went on the Forts walk. It was quite steep, but ... read more

We took an overnight bus from the town of 1770 to Airlie Beach so that we could go sailing in the Whitsunday Islands and snorkel on the great barrier reef. We had a 3 day and 2 night sailing trip booked on a boat called Pegasus. Our sailing trip was definitely not as good as we had hoped. The first day we set sail the crew told us that if the weather had been any windier the trip would have been cancelled due to safety reasons but luckily for us we went anyways. We sailed for a couple of hours in the pouring rain and giant waves - several people fell on deck and slid all the way across to the other side before someone would help them up. Luckily the wind died down after that ... read more

We were told conflicting stories about the name of this place/ these places. Some people told us it was the same town and it just had two names, and some told us they were separate towns. Who knows. Anyways, we were here from April 2-6, and we mostly just hung out at the hostel or the beach. On the 3rd when we went to the beach the water temperature was 27 degrees!! Celsius!! It was pretty much the same temperature as the air - we couldn't believe it. The most exciting thing we did was on our second last day when we went kayaking in the ocean. It was hard work, and we both got a bit roughed up. Carole has a massive fist-sized bruise in the middle of her back and I got hit in ... read more

We took the bus to Hervey Bay on the 29th and stayed the night and then our Fraser Island adventure started very brightly and early the next day. It's the only sand island in the world apparently, and has rainforests growing all over it. We checked out at 6:30, had our orientation, loaded up with our equipment and got groceries, then made our barge to the island just in the nick of time because we went the wrong way. Once we got to the Island, we had to drive inland for a while which was very very bumpy - sand roads are not the most fun to drive on. We stopped once at a creek and went for a little walk, but didn't get a chance to stop anywhere else because we took a wrong turn, ... read more

April 1st 2009

We were in Noosa from March 24-29th and had a pretty relaxing time. We mostly just hung out at the beach or the hostel and read some books. Our stay there started out pretty rocky though but then it got much better. The day we arrived the hostel didn't have any beds for us because they thought we weren't coming until the next day but luckily for us they had "emergency beds" which were basically tiny little cots that they rolled out onto the floor of a 14 bed dorm. So we tried to sleep in there the first night but weren't very successful because everyone was partying and decided to have a yelling match when they got back in the middle of the night. I guess it worked out alright for us in the end ... read more

We were in Brisbane March 21-24, but didn't really do anything too exciting. We went to a few markets, although none were as impressive as the ones in Melbourne. We took the river ferry on the second day and saw the Story Bridge, got some cheese sticks at the Riverside market which had something spread in them that tasted suspiciously like Vegemite, and then went to a movie to beat the heat. We also saw a couple from Edmonton who we travelled with on Kiwi Experience that night in the hostel. They're done travelling about the same time as us but they've been gone for a year - crazy. Our last day we went shopping at the Queen Street Mall which was kind of more like a shopping district, and that was about it for Brisbane. ... read more

Hello everyone! From Byron Bay we came to Surfer's Paradise (March 14), but we're actually staying in Mermaid Beach which are both part of the Gold Coast. We're really enjoying staying in a room of our own in a resort with our own bathroom, kitchen, balcony and tv. There are also several pools but we tend to stick to the adults-only pool. So far this week we've done some shopping at an outlet mall, a lot of hanging around in our room or by the pool, and some walking around Surfer's Paradise. On Wednesday we went to Wet'n'Wild Water World and did some watersliding which was pretty fun. Most of the slides had tubes which cut down on the scrapes you get from going over the joins in the waterslide, although there was one slide where ... read more

March 16th 2009

We were only in Byron Bay for three nights (from March 11-14) but had a really great time there. The weather was nice most of the time we were there so we got some quality beach time in. The beach was really nice which generally seems to be the case everywhere we go as long as it's not raining. We didn't do much else other than go to the beach since we weren't there long. We did go out to the bar once though, to Cheeky Monkey's, with a group of people we met at the hostel. It turns out that one of the girls that we met in New Zealand was staying at the same hostel as us so we went out with her. It was pretty neat to run into someone we met while ... read more
