I've had the department dinner, then last night was my farewell after eighteen years and five months with my current employer - finally after working for 52 years the end is in sight with just four more working days then retirement officially begins. Flights are booked, passport still away getting a required Visa, a little thought has gone into the packing, and the excitement level just starting to climb. Roll on D Day (as in departure day) Thursday 3 April 2014... read more

This morning we arrived in Auckland New Zealand. It is no longer the capitol of the country, but it is certainly the largest city. We learned that and a lot of other stuff during our tour, but I am getting ahead of myself. We started with a 7:00 wake-up call. After getting dressed, we went to the Buffet for breakfast and then reported to the Princess Theater for our tour to begin at 8:25. There were 45 of us on a 2-hour city tour, followed by a cruise of the harbor in a scow, and then an escorted tour of the Maritime Museum. Before disembarking from the ship yesterday, we had to be sniff-tested by a cute little dog, which was searching for contraband (primarily food products). New Zealand is very careful about prohibiting any fruits, ... read more

We've been a bit of a lazy bloggers recently, mostly because we are currently camping around the North Island of New Zealand, and thus have very limited wifi access, but also because we have just been quite busy taking in the wonders of this place. Arriving in Auckland almost two weeks ago truly felt like a return to civilization; after all the Spanish and French speaking countries it was so nice to have English spoken all around us, and being able to easily communicate whatever we need to. And after nearly four weeks of island hopping in French Polynesia, it was a nice change to be in a big city again. We stayed in Auckland three full days, rented a room in the house of a nice and fun Maori lady, Ruth, in a peaceful suburb ... read more

Today we all helped Joseph and Stacey move from Hamilton to Massey in Auckland ready for Joseph's new job starting on 3 March! All went well but we are all worn out!! Patrick and I drove from Whangarei and met Jennifer and Paul at the new house. Joseph and 3 VERY NICE helpers packed the first load on Friday night and Joseph drove up on Saturday morning and collected Claire on the way who had the key! Then we unpacked, had a cup of tea, and Joseph, Patrick and Paul drove down to Hamilton - collected second truck load with Patrick driving Stacey, Thomas and the cat. Jennifer, Claire and I unpacked, moved things around, made beds, cleaned etc. We unpacked the second load, had a cup of tea, and then Joseph drove back to Hamilton, ... read more

25th February Auckland, New Zealand Today we lose some friends that we have made crossing from San Francisco to Auckland, thanks John and Heather for the laughs at trivia and the launderette (in joke). We arrived in Auckland quite early as this is a turnaround day, some 400 people leave to be replaced by who knows!! Our berth is in the heart of the city harbour so anybody not on an organised trip has no trouble finding their way into the shopping areas. A favourite for yachting, Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’ and has one third of the countries population. The city has become the biggest Polynesian city in the world; many of the residents are from the Polynesian areas of the South Pacific and latterly are from Asia giving Auckland ... read more

We landed in Auckland and it was 5:30am on the 31st December. With New Zealand being 16 hours ahead of Chile in time difference and having a 13 hour flight, we actually didn't even have a 30th December, that day just disappeared, weird! Off the plane we got through border control, grabbed our bags and headed for the luggage checking area. For some reason the sniffer dog and policeman came over to us, the officer asked us to both stand still while the dog smelt us, I was fine but the dog then sat down next to Freeman so we then got taken out of the que. A cameraman then came over and started filming us getting questioned by the officer. He asked us when we last had drugs saying it didnt matter if we'd had ... read more

DAY 5: Friday" FINALS DAY." Today’s game is at 1 pm so we are keeping office hours and because it’s not a hair straightening day we pull out of the camp at 8 am. There’s the normal coffee stop, only a double for me today, Harry wanted to take my temperature. The Routine stays the same, the team walk the horses across the road, breakfast, tend to the odd cuts, kicks, and battle wounds , get a wash and shampoo. Salt water wash with Manuka honey for a saddle sore on Mavis, a bit of extra attention for Ngaio as she had a bit of a limp last night, seems clear this morning, an extra cuddle for Gypsy this morning as she seems to need it. Tig and Rich arrive mid morning all is relaxed. The ... read more

BMW : Day 2 Boss Hogg and I are up at 4am getting down the cuppas, she’s an insomniac and well it’s just my time of day. 5am, wake everybody else up, they struggle with the morning especially our Mongolians, “right that’s it, 4am for you lot tomorrow morning”. Some quick cereal or toast and in the van. Where’s Rachael? Straightening her hair, that really gets Harry going; she may get 3.30am tomorrow haha. Still dark when we drop the team off at the paddock to walk the horses to the ground while Harry, Cody and I mix the high energy horse breakfast, a low order mix I am assured by Cody compared to the requirements of the high goal polo horses. After breakfast there’s time for a morning wash down, grooming almost have a team ... read more

Needless to say there is nobody else around at that hour of the day, Harry's theory, get there early gets the best if not all the space, best water, Gazebo spot, etc, have everything done and well into the third cuppa by the time anybody else arrives. Up goes the good music as the horses are eating and the daily tack is organised, then a wash and groom. 8am Harry and I are at fuck off good coffee co-op getting the crew flat whites and cronuts, a dough nut mated with a ... read more
