We were very sad to say goodbye to Australia as we had such a wonderful time there for the last month. We arrived in Auckland very late as we are now three hours ahead of Australia and has taken a couple of days to get used to the time difference. We went down to the marina yesterday but are finding the car parking quite expensive - $6/£3 for half an hour. we are going to investigate a few of the sights today - Mount Eden and One Tree Hill - hope we can find our way around without a sat nav. Have had to use my phone for google maps a couple of times to find the right way - just checked my phone bill so won't be using my phone again as a sat nav!!!! ... read more

So, after my stay in Queenstown, I took a bus to Christchurch so that I could catch my flight to Indonesia the next morning. The bus left in the morning and it was due to arrive at about 5:30pm. My flight was at 6am, so there was no point in getting a hostel for the night; instead I decided to wait it out at the airport. I gave a call to Jim Worthington, a friend of Rob Hacking (with whom I had stayed in Auckland). I called him mainly to meet up for a drink and also because I wanted to return a book that Rob had lent me. Anyway, Jim asked me about my plans (I told him I was going to kill time in the airport afterwards) and he invited me to stay at ... read more

Deze weg is ... read more

I spent today as Kevan's guest. I rested until early afternoon, when I went swimming again. This time I tried to swim in the main pool, which meant that a lifeguard had to lower me into the water in a pneumatically lifted chair. The chair was, it said, rated to 250 kg., but it stuck two-thirds of the way up when they tried to lift me out. I was stuck there for at least five minutes, with my feet dangling, which, after about a minute, hurt my thigh muscles a bit. The first lifeguard called a second lifeguard, which did very little good, though the second lifeguard was able to raise the chair manually a few inches. The two of them called an older person, presumably the manager, but just as he arrived the chair suddenly ... read more

The Government has been up to no good recently with tax payer money. Recently, they bought back a lagging and in poor condition national rail system that they had sold a few years back for $300m. The buy back price was listed at $700m but over the last few weeks the actual cost has been calculated at closer to $1billion (taking into consideration the cost to buy off private employees, upgrade infrastructure that is in deplorable shape, oh yes lest we forget repaint all the old trains - that OZ wanted to put in a museum - with the logo Kiwi Rail). Now this week on Wednesday they announced that on the following day they would be drastically increasing the fees charged to drivers of diesel vehicles - which specifically hits the truckies hard in the ... read more

I'm back again this year doing fundraising for men's health. I'll post a photo this weekend, however I thought that I'd get the invitation requesting a small donation out and see what comes back. Thanks again to all those that donated last year. All you have to do is go to: http://www.movember.com/nz/donate Enter my registration number: 191413 And the rest is up to you. Thanks and have a good day...... Hi All, During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I'll be growin a Mo. That's right I'm bringing the Mo back because I'm passionate about men's health and the fight against prostate cancer. Why... Every year in New Zealand 2,656 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 600 die of the disease, making prostate cancer the second largest cause of male cancer deaths, after ... read more

Hi Folks Thanks for all your messages, it really brightens our day to read them. Well, after spending approx 19 hours travelling from Hawaii to Auk via Syd and losing a day passing the international date line, we are well and truly in NZ. We have been up the Sky tower this morning, over 200 metres high and with a 360 view of Auk. Looked all around the marinas, picked the car up and went to Mission bay for fish and chips, fantastic. Tommorrow, we will be travelling upto the bay of Islands where we will spend 2 days, then down the Coromandel coast to Rotorua then down to Tongeraro crossing where Cher and Myself will hopefully weather permitting walk the 10ml volcanic round trip. Hope to keep you updated early next weel All our love ... read more

Well it’s been a while since my last update. I must beg off given that I haven’t been home for a weekend in more than two months. But to allay your fears, yes, I am alive and kicking. The following is a brief synopsis. The last three weeks I’ve been working towards dive certification. I am now licensed to dive to 18m - over 55 feet down. It’s an incredible feeling moving though a fluid like you’re weightless, I had to relearn how to move when gravity is seemingly not working against you. We’re going up to Goat Island next week to do some recreation dives, perhaps I’ll have photos from this trip. Whips and Spurs - social and fashion event (I love my polka dot tie) masked as a horse race. Lucky day at ... read more

Here we sit, the only saps in a huge bar at 11AM, Gina with ‘Go Bears’ written on her face in plum eye pencil, two pints of local brew and our laptop. We awoke early this morning and did some power sightseeing prior to coming here. The owners of our bed and breakfast mused at Gina’s insistence on spending a good portion of today cooped up in a local tavern watching football instead of absorbing the vast beauty of Auckland. Clearly, they don’t understand the importance of the event. While touring the city yesterday and this morning, we came to understand the fantastic splendor of this waterfront city - in my mind, a combination of Marin’s topography, Seattle’s location, San Diego’s weather and Manhattan’s neighborhoods. Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is the epicenter of the Kiwi ... read more
