We slept outside someones house and woke up to snow... no wonder we were shivering all night! Tongariro has extremely changeable weather all year round, and has 3 active volcanoes! We opted for a leisurely stroll rather than teaming up with all the hikers. Although cold it was definately a bonus seeing the ranges covered in snow... very pretty!!... read more

Early start after the windy night being rocked about in the van and straight off, back tracking 20km to Port Chalmers and heading north again. First stop - Shag Rock (or Scum Rock as we later named it). Shag rock is a small DOC wildlife reserve for bird life and seals. Huge numbers of the blubbery hulks were just laying around on the beach and on the grass for us to walk amongst but unfortunately as the weather was atrocious for yet another day, we settled for a view from the van. We had a coffee next to a small inlet that had collected a tremendous amount of sea foam. Once in the gulley, the captured white scum was blown all over the place by the strong winds, including onto the sides of our van, not ... read more

The road that carried us from the interior to the southern stretch of the Fiordland was, quite honestly, boring. The land lost its grand mountains and lakes and became simple farming land - flat and featureless terrain. It continued on like this for a couple of hours and then - thankfully, we reached Te Anau. As we approached the town it was reminiscent of Lake Taupo on the north island, what with the beautiful clear lake being bordered on one side by mountains and the other by the town itself (a much smaller population however). As was tradition, and it being mid morning, we stopped by the side of the lake for a drop of tea before dropping in at the DOC centre to investigate possible walks in the area. Discovering that, although this was prime ... read more

I left Whakatane on a beautiful sunny day, which as New Zealand's sunniest spot, it has a lot of. The drive south to Gisborne took me through densely forrested river valleys and, as I neared the coast of Poverty Bay, farmland made starkly beautiful by the autumnal colours. I stopped off in Gisborne only to stock up on food, but this town holds an important place in NZ's European history, as the first spot where Captain James Cook (here he is again!) came ashore. There's a small statue to mark the event, as well as a more enigmatic memorial to Nick Young, the lookout who first set eyes on the landmass and won himself a load of booze and the honour of having a nearby chunk of rock named after him. But aside from that there ... read more

hiked Heaphy Track starting Kotaitai, first night Lewis Hut,second night Goulan downs Hut,then out to drive to blenheim in brother's car while he picked up my van at Kohaihai and drove to meet me at Blenheim.Got bad blisters on soles of both feet and had to endure a lot of pain to get to the finish.I think they might have been avoided if I had worn puttees to stop little stones getting into my boots. Also my pack was too heavy, mainly because I took a small gas cooker and a kettle but all huts except one have gas and pots and kettles. There are good facilities except at Goulan downs which has no gas cooker and the open fire emits too much smoke--so much that it set off the smoke alarm at 2am!! Highlights are the little brave ... read more

Seuraavana päivänä sam... read more
