It usually takes Mango and me about a week to really settle in to vacation mode. We do a couple of activities, drive around and explore beaches, partake in local cuisine, the usual. For some reason, and I've not thought too hard about this, we're ninety five percent of the way there already. I noticed when I conga line danced my way from our Bure to dinner tonight. It just felt right. Our day started early. At an undisclosed time, the sun started to illuminate the silk curtains tied to the windows of our Bure. The silk, flapping from the ocean breeze, only appeared as an accent, like the flick of a fountain pen across a signature line. It was still too dark to make out the rest of our room. No matter. I wasn't about ... read more

I wasn't sure how quickly I'd want to start journaling again, but after fewer than four hours on Ono Island, I've already received quite an impression, not to mention every opportunity anyone could ask for to reflect and slow things down. The 35 hour travel bender started Wednesday at 6am, proceeded with a 9 hour sampler of Los Angeles' King's Hawaiian BBQ and Hermosa beach, an 11 hour flight into Suva, and a 6 hour layover before our final flight into Kadavu. The 15 passenger plane, occupied by 3 locals, 2 pilots, mango, and me, looked sturdy enough at first glance, and reminded me of the same plane I took from Kathmandu to Lukla (thought I told Mango I took a similar plane from Seattle to Vancouver. Not long after that thought, were told due to ... read more

And In The End...Da Da Da. So here we are, our adventure is coming to an end and is all but over. We've been on our travels for over a year now and it's been a roller coaster ride full of excitement, enjoyment and plenty of fun. It's been an eye opening and educational year full of constant unpredictable situations where we've met and made numerous friends from all over the world. From riding elephants in Thailand to living and working independently in Melbourne to now enjoying traditional Fijian dance (more on that later!), it's certainly been a year to remember. Tracking back two weeks to when we were still in Queenstown, New Zealand and living in our campervan, we were meant to go luging (similar to go-karting) but due to terrible rain, we opted to ... read more

Geo: -19.1846, -177.711It's another sea day with one less hour in it. After breakfast, we listen to a presentation by Kainoa regarding activities in the next few islands followed by the entertaining Melvyn Foster and "From Wind & Wood to Steam & Steel", part of his series on maritime history. At noon, Mom wanted to lay out in the sun for a while so I went up with her to the pool and blogged while she sunbathed. Around 1:30, we ate a light lunch from the burger bar. Returning to our room, Karen napped while I loaded pictures and watched the news. It was after 6pm when she woke up so we went to the dinner late. We had dinner with a couple of familiar faces and two new ones from San Diego. Leaving the dinner ... read more

Geo: -16.779, -179.907Being a remote island with relatively no improvements, there is no pier for the Amsterdam to dock so today is another tender day. With no schedule to adhere to, we get breakfast, gather our things and saunter down to deck A where we luck out, board immediately and enjoy a pleasant 15 minute ride to Dravuni Island. As we approach, the beach and crystal clear water accented by sunlight stands out, offering several shades of blue and green water and no surf. Less than two miles in length from north to south, Dravuni Island lies in the Kadavu Island group of Fiji. Its volcanic peaks give way to a remote village of just 200 or so friendly villagers who live among the island's shady palms. We're told these welcoming locals and their children often ... read more

Geo: -18.13, 178.43Ahh. Another night with an extra hour of sleep. It's so nice but someday it will all go back. It's 6:30am and time to get up. Actually, I'm up at 6 because it's light outside and I start downloading pictures and text to the Travelpod website. I get part of it done before it stops working so I exit quickly to avoid burning up my limited internet time I have left. I had hoped to send off two or three of the days I've completed this morning but it's not happening. We're docking at the pier in Suva at 8am so it's another light breakfast and we head down to the gangway. They clear the ship for disembarkation just as we get there so we have our IDs scanned and exit. Our drivers are ... read more

I left LA at 23:30 on the 19th October and arrive in Fiji at 6am on the 21st October. So, I never really lived a 20th October 2015 which is very bizarre. I get to my hostel at 6:30am and they allow me to check in and go to my room. I feel exhausted and typically on my last day in LA I got a cold so feel kinda crappy. I stay in bed most of the day, which displeases my Chinese roommate for reasons unknown. The next day I venture out but still feel rubbish so don't do too much. Same with the third day, and head to bed at 8pm as I feel so rubbish. The young Chinese man comes in and starts calling to me “England, are you awake?”. I am but ignore ... read more

Inno is about as stereotypical as a Fijian can get. Substantial in size, loveable, a broad grin tattooed on the front of his melon and if any more laidback he’d be comatose. Inno’s job was ostensibly to mow the lawns of a little resort in Fiji’s Muscat Cove. Whipper-snipper in hand, he would loll around the grounds, regularly stopping to chat with guests, disappear for the occasional nap and every now and then he would even get around to cutting some grass. Watching Inno one day actually carrying out his job description, he came across a lone coconut in the middle of the lawn. You could almost see the cogs turning inside his head as to what might be the most energy-conservative action to take. He could have bent over, picked up the offending coconut and ... read more

After a detour to Kioa Island and a blustery time trying to reach Matui in the North of Taveuni, a day for packing in preparation for departure from Rewa, currently at anchor in Viani bay, Vanua Levu, enroute to Nadi to see Priya and Ian, from Taveuni. The great guys from Dolphin Bay Divers is swinging by to collect me by boat and cross the Somosomo Straits in the morning. A change of plan and I find myself heading home for a few days before driving to France for the summer - what a treat lies in store. This morning Rewa crew headed off to trek the waterfalls I visited last year. Jack Fisher is a local guy who looks after visiting yachties and he stayed aboard for a couple of hours during which time we ... read more
