Oceania » Fiji April 1st 2016

Easter Weekend was thrown at us pretty early. Most of the group decided to check out Vanua Levu the second largest island of Fiji. Little did we know this would take a 15 hour boat ride to get to it and a 10 hour boat ride followed by a 2 hour bus ride back on ferries that were at least second hand. Certainly the boat back seemed like it was 3rdhand. It had been a German boat before and was most likely designed for a one hour ferry crossing, not a 10 hour crossing. Even the trays in the café were second hand- I noticed some Caledonian MacBrayne ferry trays, who would have thought you would be on the other side of the world being served with a tray from a boat operating from mainland Scotland ... read more

Over the last two weeks, we have had new volunteers arriving, although in a much smaller number and visited Snake Island a tiny island with incredible coral reefs between ourselves and it. The island is home to many birds as well as sea snakes, although we didn’t see any this time (more like snakeless island). Sea snakes are not shy creatures and have come up to us during dives. They end up growing to 1.5m in length. The dives we are doing now are coral, benthic and invertebrate point outs ready for surveying the reefs. There are around 60 species we need to be able to identify in all their different forms so no easy or quick task. I have also been working on a waste plan for the island ensuring that our practises are something ... read more

First week back on Caqalai finished this morning, waking up at 5am to say goodbye to the volunteers, who were leaving this month. Everyone gets to know each other very quickly and before you know it people are leaving to head off to other projects, travelling or just going back home. It made me think how fast this month has gone and how over the last two weeks we have been in limbo stage after the strongest tropical cyclone (Winston) ever to hit the Southern Hemisphere. When Winston hit we were already in Suva (the capital of Fiji), we moved to a hostel to meet up with the rest of the group and tried to figure out what was happening, what state Fiji was in and how we could help. We were able to ask The ... read more

During this weekend we managed to get to Pacific Harbour for the weekend and stay there. The cyclone hadn’t hit the place too bad, although one of the resorts had damaged bures. Here we managed to do a dive to see sharks, such as bull, lemon and tawny nurse sharks. It was interesting to get back to Suva which took over 2 hours before we had even left. Bus after bus flew past us as they were all full, resulting in us having to get a the 45 minute ride back on a taxi to Suva. Earlier that week we decided to head to the rainforest outside Suva. There are some nice treks and rope swing to go and swing into a water pool. Since the schools were still closed, a lot of school kids were ... read more

We just booked a trip to four countries beginning August 1, and we will be gone six weeks. We got an email through Travel Zoo advertising airfare to Australia with a free stopover in New Zealand for $998 round trip per person. Clicking on the site took me to the Air New Zealand website and the option for multiple flights. So I played around with it for a while, adding a stopover in Fiji, and then another one in Rarotonga, one of the Cook Islands. The best I could do fare-wise was $2650 for the two of us round trip. But the more I searched, the more I thought this was a smoking deal. Just a round trip flight to Fiji alone would have cost almost that much, and it was the same airline that Air ... read more

Last Friday we decided to have a trip to Suva, the capital of Fiji. Initially there were only going to be a few of us, however shortly after leaving the island we were met by staff on Leleuvia island (where we change boats) who stated they were all evacuating the island due to the Tropical Cyclone Winston. Soon after this, Caqalai were evacuated and now everyone is in Suva. TC Winston was a category 5 cyclone that ripped through Fiji. Unfortunately there were some casualties and many houses have been destroyed. We were fortunately safe in a hotel in Suva. Caqalai island is been badly affected with the Kava hall being flattened, a coconut tree landing on the Common Room and 3 bures (Fiji houses) are damaged, although we are not too sure which ones. One ... read more

Already within the first two weeks I have forgotten about the cold UK winter that I left behind as you settle in with your new family of people from all over the world. Presently there are 32 of us- all different ages and all different backgrounds, but with similar passions- marine conservation and diving. So many volunteers have previously said that Caqalai is like living in a documentary, and that was proved by our second week when a night hawksbill turtle started laying her eggs beside one of the bures (a traditional Fijian house). We were lucky enough to watch her as she began hiding the last of her eggs before heading back to the sea. On our 4th open water dive out at one of the marine sites, we saw white tipped reef sharks, turtles, ... read more

The wind finally settled down, the sun came out in full force, and Mango and I got to experience a 'typical' day on Ono Island. Typical here is a relative term, as we started our day in the calm clear reef just off of the resort, then traveled about a mile south to the nearby village where over half of the Resort's staff and their family live and were about to celebrate their children's graduation. Snorkeling was very chill. We kayaked about a half a mile from the shore and then donned our masks and fins. It was a little uncomfortable getting in the water since we didn't really know what was down there, but as soon as I faced the ocean floor, Bob Marley started playing in my head, "three little birds, sits by my ... read more

Another beautiful day waking up to the sounds of the water crashing along the sidewall, with the dull roar of ocean rumbling along the Astrolabe reef, which is visible along the entire horizon as though a tsunami was being held back from coming any closer to shore. When we first arrived, I mistook the rumbling sound for a jet, but we haven't seen or heard a plane in days. We haven't even seen a car or a road, as everyone on Ono island and nearby Kavadu Island get around by boat. Between the lack of major transportation and the lack of communications devices, Mango and I find ourselves with loads of extra time to do anything or nothing at all. Though at some point, we normally like to do something. Today, we took an hour boat ... read more

Another breezy morning, one that Mango would come to terms with in an intimate way hours after breakfast. Today was our first activity day: SCUBA diving the Astrolabe Reef. The ride out to our first spot was choppy. Somehow, Dee, our Divemaster, spotted a manta ray and told us to get our snorkel gear and slide into the water for a peek. Even before I could hand Mango her mask and snorkel, she was feeling queasy and looking a light shade of green. But being the trooper she is, she grabbed the mask and hopped overboard, eyeing the 8 foot visibility, which almost entirely appeared as a deep purple with a bottomless floor of murky sand. We swashed around for about 10 minutes but didn't see anything. Dee kept pointing into the abyss and swimming around, ... read more
