Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 15 - Scoresby Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
A quiet Sunday was had by all to recover and recharge prior to the final leg on Monday heading out to Sydney. Claire got some antibiotics to clear the lingering ear, nose & throat irritation prior to flying home on Tuesday coming. We had a barbie after Craig and Shelley had a few friends around to catch up. That was about it thankfully as we relaxed on the day of rest. For the remainder of the day, bloggers day off. [View Full Entry]

Our first night sleeping with a 2 week old baby … woken briefly twice albeit nothing compared to the parents that actually have to get up and look after her! We got up relatively early and decide to head into city using the train. It appears that the 26km journey takes nearly an hour so we’re not taking high speed transit - however, for a relatively low fare, saves us all the hassle of traffic parking etc. We arrived at Flinders Street about lunchtime and headed to the tourist information office and then into the main shopping areas. We had intended [View Full Entry]

So having written nothing for so long, here goes 2 entries within the same week. This is a short and sweet entry about our weekend trip down to Melbourne to see the AFL Grand Final in the world famous MCG....a 110,000 seater stadium! So on Friday 25th Sept we got up at just before 4am!! I don't think I have ever seen this time on the clock when getting up...its usually around the time we come in and fall into bed!! So our flight took off around 6am and we were enroute to Melbourne where the pilot was quick to tell [View Full Entry]

Grand Final Day!!! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Well I arrived in wet and to be honest pretty cold Melbourne on Friday. Sydney had been beautiful blue sky and gorgeous sunshine at 8am! I spent the day chilling out with Rachel, Joseph and Eva and Michael when he got in from work! Then quiet Friday night catching up on a bit of sleep in preparation for Saturday! Saturday was all about decorating the house for the big match and preparing food, etc. Guests started to arrive about 1pm in plenty of time for kick off(not sure thats the correct term for Aussie Rules). The match was very close all [View Full Entry]

Hey!
