Now on the toenail of the foot of the last leg. It's sunny, blue and chilly. Rubbish sleep in the tinytent as usual. Cold and cramped. But only 2 or 3 more to go. Only blokes like Ranulph Feinnes would have any clue as to how I'm suffering down here. Pity me not. I'm pretty sure you're not anyway. I'll cope. First thing on the morning of Saturday 25th there was a lot of clearing up to do from the night before which Graham and I did but we were well organized and didn’t take too long. When Mark eventually staggered out he was amazed that we had made such good progress. Neighbour Willy arrived early with the cement mixer he had promised on the back of one of his ELEVEN (yes – eleven) trailers. It was a good sized trailer and Mark asked if he could borrow it to collect the roofing sheets from the scrap yard. Mark and Graham met Nigel at the scrap yard to make sure they were suitable roofing sheets and Nigel was impressed. They promptly loaded up eight sheets which, actually, haven’t been paid for yet but this type of casual ... read more

Thursday 23rd February became a bit of a working day. Graham was up early to make some progress on preparing the foundations of the new shed which will house a couple of caravans (including Sweetie) and our car. Last night, family friend Nigel had provided the basic information and some detailed measurements to enable some post holes to be dug out so Graham spent much of the day and most of his energy digging with a very heavy crow-bar and a long-handled shovel. Considering his medical condition and his current state of fitness (overweight!) he made remarkable progress and the holes, six of them, all came along nicely. As for me, realizing that time was running out for packing up the caravan, I made as much progress as I could, identifying and suitably packing a) things ... read more

Wednesday 22nd February – Happy Birthday to my cousin Colin in St Albans, UK. We hope you had a special day. Often during our travels, particularly in Victoria, we were made aware of a camping area called Sheepyard Flat. Sarah and Darryl spent some time there, it’s a regular escape for the Reeves family and even nephew Bertie in Melbourne spoke of it as a special place to camp. We had thought that, while we were in Mansfield, we might be able to spend a night there in the tent so that we could return to the UK having had at least one night in the tent and having done some “free” camping. Unfortunately, our time in Mansfield was too limited but, so that we could actually see what the fuss was about, Mark had it ... read more

Today, Saturday 18th February our main objective was to visit our dear friend Wilma who lives in Wangaratta. We had arranged to get there for about midday so we had plenty of time to get ready. Wang is only about 40 kilometers from Benalla so we had a bit of time to spare to carry on with our tidying up process. Wilma has lived in Wang for a good many years and her home – The House That Jack Built – is as delightful a home as we have had the pleasure of visiting during our many trips to Australia. We have actually stayed there several times including earlier on our trip and we feel the design, the layout, the construction and the location are all perfect. It’s not huge or overly luxurious. It’s just comfortable ... read more

Sunday 18th December – the morning was very overcast and, maybe because of the early birdsong, Graham was up and about before 7 o’clock. He couldn’t sleep but was still tired and watched the early morning news on the TV and then a Triathlon event from Auckland. After that he dozed in the chair on and off until about 11:00am. Meanwhile, I had prepared sandwiches and a flask in readiness for another day out. Today we wanted to spend some time in “Bushranger” country – an area where, in the late 1800s, infamous outlaws took shelter because of the denseness of the woodland and the difficulty in traversing the hilly terrain. Not far from Mansfield is Stringy Bark Creek where the most notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly, committed the crime that made him a “Dead or Alive” ... read more

Friday 16th December - we were both up early as we were hoping for a fairly prompt start on our trip to be re-united with the caravan. Graham carried everything down to the car as each bag was packed but it was a bit of a “balancing act” making sure Mad Micky was nowhere near when the front door was opened. As a young kitten he’s not allowed outside yet but, given his guile, speed and general athletic ability, we’re sure it won’t be long before he fools Daphne into letting him out accidentally. Daphne will have her hands full over the next few days with Micky, Christmas shopping and cake and pudding baking. In addition she has been asked by a very busy Grant and Anna if she could provide a meal for David and ... read more

Monday 7th November was a warm bright morning - there had been a bit of a down-pour during our party celebrations of the previous evening so everything had a nice, fresh feel to it this morning. When we eventually stirred we could hear a couple of children’s voices! Why weren’t they at school? Obviously the combination of the yoga weekend and last night’s party had proved too much for Beth and Ken and they clearly weren’t up for school. We had a relaxed couple of hours in the garden before we decided to see a bit of the Mansfield countryside. Although we’ve been to Mansfield twice before we have not had a chance to explore the area, apart from a quick drive into the Mount Samaria State Park just along the road. Today we hoped to ... read more

Saturday (5th November) morning dawned lovely and bright but there had been a very heavy dew during the night so anything left out was a bit soggy. Graham normally likes to put the awning, chairs, table etc away the night before when we’re moving on but this morning, as we didn’t have far to travel, we decided to hang around and let the strong sun do its bit to dry everything out. Our Burnie acquaintances were doing much the same so it gave us time for a bit more chat about Tassie, travelling and our future stay with Gerry Davies in Burnie. We were ready to leave at about 10:00am, quite late for us, but we only had a journey of 120 kilometers so we had time to spare. We bade our Burnie friends farewell – ... read more

We had intended to leave Mansfield today but were easily persuaded to stay an extra day because the Footie Grand Final that ended in a draw last Saturday was being replayed. There was a great deal of excitement in the air and it was almost as though the first match hadn’t taken place at all. The game didn’t start until 2.30 so we had time in the morning to do a bit of sight seeing. We drove further along the gravel road past the entrance to Julie’s house and continued for a few kilometers before we saw the sign for Mount Samaria National Park. We drove through a creek and began to climb on up, perhaps another 5kms, before we saw the sign for Back Creek Falls. It was a 3kms return walk to the falls. ... read more
