Kangaroos!
we ate some This summer weather had been absolutely wonderful! Yes, it is very hot and humid, but we love it! When we got through baggage reclaim, we found or airport shuttle with a few Germans! We brought SO MUCH stuff compared to them. They each had 1 suitcase and carryon. We had 2 suitcases, a giant backpack, and carryon. Oh well, we stuck out as Americans… taking unnecessary things. It was an hour drive to our apartments and we were freaking out about how they drive on the other side of the road. They pass on the right and merge to the right and can make left turns on red. Our apartments are so nice! We have villa-type things with 4 apartments each and there are a lot of them. We were so jet lagged and sat by the pool for 5 hours! There is a hole in the ozone layer over Australia, so the sun is really intense, and we have to wear SPF 30! I met my roommates (Louise-German, Matt-Aussie, and Russell-Aussie), and Michelle’s (Amy, Gordon, and Tim- all Aussies). We had “o week” this whole week (orientation), but really only participated in activities for 3 days. We had a lot

this is our pool at our apartment complex! of free food… the most popular thing that we had (and it was served all three days) was what they call sausage sizzle. It’s barbecued (now don’t be confused, barbecued doesn’t mean bbq sauce, it means grilled) sausage (we think lamb?) with a piece of white bread around it and either ketchup or bbq sauce on it. During check in on Monday, we saw Ariana, who also goes to Tech, and the three of us have been inseparable since! Internet is limited, which is so strange because every time you use it, it starts running out… we figured videos take the most internet, so no watching the bachelor for us ☹.
We ate kangaroo!!! And lots of Indonesian food, and the mangoes here are the best mangoes I have ever had! They don’t have a hint of spiciness like the ones at home have. They have these candies called Red Frogs, which are like Swedish Fish, but taste more like twizzlers. The people passing them out are an organization through local churches and supply parties, pancake dinners, fun activities, and will fill your fridge if you’re broke. We talked to two of the girls and they were really sweet.
When we get phones we will be able to call them to hang out. Matt told us he wanted to make us dinner, so we ran to the liquor store (which is the only place that sells any type of alcohol) but we forgot our IDs! It was a little over a mile there, so we decided not to go back. We had pasta with a bacon, mushroom cream sauce and it was really good, and we had hilarious conversation (somehow koalas with Chlamydia came up in conversation?). When we finally made it to the grocery store, we were there and at the discount toiletries store for a total of 3 hours there and back! Getting back with the carts was hilarious. We had to roll them down the sidewalk, but these carts had 4 movable wheels in any direction, so if there was a slant to the left, the entire cart went left and almost into the road, we were laughing so hard and finally made it back. Lamb is eaten a lot here and it doesn’t really agree with me or Michelle, and I think it’s gonna take a little while to get used to.
Thursdays are
the beach!
at mooloolaba party nights here is Mooloolaba. We went out for our first night to club 240v. They had free busses taking us there, which is really nice because we would usually have to pay for us a bus or a taxi. There was an old man driving the bus and talked to Ariana on the way there and kept talking even though she couldn’t hear him, he was really funny. The club was crazy and people didn’t start dancing for about half an hour. A lot of the music was old, but it got better and more recent as the night went on. It was packed and we met a few nice guys, and a couple meatheads. It was a toga party, but we didn’t wear togas, oh well! On our way back, we had to get a Maxi Taxi, which costs $40 total, so we packed 10 people in so it was $4/person. Not bad, $4 total for our first night out!
Friday we went to the BEACH! It was beautiful and sunny and there were lots of tan Australians! The waves were killer, they were huge and we had to go under almost every 10 seconds! Being in
some of Uni
this is the library the waves was a workout in itself. Michelle and I went on a walk along the beach and saw the lifeguard stands, which have giant megaphones on them that they called out to people when they weren’t swimming or surfing between the correct flags. They also had a jet ski and intense surfboard looking thing for rescue, and both make complete sense because of the size of waves. We were exhausted and just hung out the rest of the night. At the beginning of the week we had been going to bed around 8 and 9 because we were so tired, but waking up around 6 or 7. We still wake up fairly early because the sun is so bright in the morning and light starts coming in around 5 or so. I was up bright and early at 6 this morning, then 6:30, and decided to get up at 7:30. We have a gym, lap pool, regular pool, and beach volleyball court here. Off to the gym and lap pool then we’re heading to the regular pool to soak up some more rays. Today begins our first weekend in the Sunshine Coast!!
