Around the campfire
Pat and Damo rocking the party Well its been less than 2 weeks since i last posted, but it feels like so much longer. Have been busy, busy, busy!
Starting from the beginning. Last Tuesday me and Steve went whitewater rafting at the Russell River, about an hour south of Cairns. What an amazing day. We went for a jungle trek for about 45 mins before the rafting towards our start point. In two man rafts we then rode the Grade 3-4 rapids of the Russell. Haven't had so much fun in a long time! We went down rapids backwards, sidewards and occasionally frontwards. Managed to stay relatively injury free and only fell out of the boat once! Had a fantastic time, and cant wait to go again.
Tuesday evening saw the last night at Dougie's for many of us, so we had a big party on the beach. We lit a bonfire, got lots of alcohol, 2 guys came equipped with a guitar and we even got a bit of firedancing and fireating from some of our multi talented backpacking friends! It was an extremely memorable night, although somewhat tainted when right at the death of the party (10 mins after I left), an

Looks tasty, bit hot maybe? unopened bottle of beer that had been stupidly thrown onto the bonfire, exploded. Fortunately only 5 or 6 people remained at the party, 2 of them (Pat and Jess) needing minor hospital treatment. But other than that, it was a great night.
On Wednesday I headed for Cairns with 3 English boys (Pat, Cam and Dave) who have a car called Barry. I've been with these guys ever since, although we are going our separate ways for now, we will likely be meeting up again at Fraser Island next week. We spent 2 nights in Cairns and drank a fair bit more beer, before we headed to Townsville to spend Friday night. Townsville was nice enough, and we met more locals there than at any point so far on the trip. But we just spent one night there before heading to nearby Magnetic Island to spend the weekend. Spent 2 nights in a resort which had a Koala and Wildlife sanctuary on site. Was pretty cool. Got to hold a croc, a snake, and see koalas and other wildlife including many birds native to Australia, for example, the kookaburra. Though they made a lot of noise at night! But
How all good parties should end
Tom, Jess and Gus at the end of a hard nights partying! had a couple of relaxing days, which was about time.
From Magnetic Island we headed to Airlie Beach, which is the base from which to do the Whitsunday Islands. Have been at Airlie since, and will probably move on tomorrow. After just spending a few days/nights chilling out and boozing I headed to the Whitsunday Islands on Thursday on a 2 day/2 night trip. We sailed on a yacht named Condor. Apparently its a pretty famous boat, having won all the most prestigious boat races in the world. But can't say I'd ever heard of it! Spent the last couple of days sailing around the Whitsundays and doing some world class snorkelling. Also managed to get some whale and dolphin spotting in as well. Yesterday we stopped off on Whitsunday Island itself and visited the world famous Whitehaven Beach. It was phenomenal. We firstly went to a viewpoint which overlooked the beach and its surroundings before heading to the beach itself. I can't describe in words how amazing it looked and the photos I took certainly don't do it justice! But it was pretty special.
Arrived back in Airlie today, and will figure out my plans for the

Me surrounded by birds. This time, alas, it was the feathered variety next few days, but I'm hoping to head to Rockhampton tomorrow before going to Fraser in the middle of next week. By the time I write next I should be in Brisbane.
