Went out on a sailing trip yesterday to the Whitsunday Islands. There were only 4 other people on our sailboat, called "Illusions" which was kind of nice. The Dive Lady on the boat talked me into doing another dive out there at a place called "The Maze" just like its name, there is lots of swim thoughts, caves, ect so we swam though a bunch of them. Some of them were quite narrow and made me a little nervous..Naomi (Dive Guide) had a cult follwing of about 200 fish that followed her during the entire dive...couldnt figure out why until, at the end of the dive we sat on the bottom and she opened up a can of fish food. So we watched them swim all around us eating up the food. was pretty cool.
I find myself not wanting to do anything here, Just that one day trip cost me 200 bucks! People keep telling me I should have come to Australia 5 years go. Apperently then the exhange rate was like 2 to 1 in my favor. And now the Australian dollar is worth more than the US dollar. Id rather do some exploring on my own than
do silly tourist things anyhow. Also ive noticed, (least on the East coast) there are tons of jobs here.
I have yet to meet many Americans. Have met LOADS of Germans. It seems half of Germanys population is currently in Australia. Lots of Canadians too. Have heard so many different languages here! more often than i hear english!
The wet season has come four months early. This is bad news for agriculture in Oz. I heard that this year is the wettest in something like 12 years.
McDonalds is my new favorite place in Australia. yes, i know how ridulous that sounds. I never go to McDonalds at home BUT here they are the only place that has Free WiFi, therefore they are my very best friends. My eyes light up everytime i see that golden arch 😊
I HATE the payphones here. Id like to smash them all. In america you can use a payphone for free with a phonecard. (well you have to pay for the phonecard of course) here you have to put money into the payphone to make a call with your bloody phonecard, so you are paying twice. i am up
to about $20 dollars fed to the evil payphones.
My trusty guidedbook has let me astray... it told me about this wonderful place called Mackay. It went on about deserted beaches and beautiful old buildings in the city center ect. Sounded perfect since it is only an hour from where iam meeting Rebecca and Daren. So i booked a greyhound ticket and arrived last night. There is only one hostel here and it is terrible. This town is aweful. There is litterally NOTHING here. It must be some kind of sick joke played by the authors of BUG Guide Australia. Seriously, though, not funny at all. I hate it here. now iam in a pickle because i have 5 days before i can go to Ibilbie and dont know where else to go. I wish i hadnt been in such a hurry to leave Airlie Beach. Now i just have to wait around here, in the rain....Its going to be a long 5 days.....
One thing that is a really bummer here in Nothern Australia is that is it sooo HOT and the beaches look so beautiful and inviting BUT you cant swim. Its like the biggest tease
ever. Its like being so thursty in the desert and seeing a lagoon but not being able to drink it! Its terrible. you cant swim anywhere because of the box jellyfish, irukanjii and wost of all- salwater crocodiles. its just so sad. Apparently I will be able to swim at the beaches on the more south, So that makes me feel better.
It is pouring rain right now. Iam sitting in Mcdonalds trying to figure out how to get out of this town. ugh. worst day ever.
By the way-The photos are not the terrible town of Mackay, they are more photos from yesterday of Airlie Beach.
Mom/Dad- im so sorry i havnet been able to call much. the phones here are so frustrating. the other day (when i said i would call) i tried but couldnet get the phone to work. hope you didnt worry. all is well-except for this rain! i love you and miss you!
