Tara A Wanderlust

Tara & Ryan

Grew up in Montana. Lived in Alaska for awhile and then Hawaii. I have an unhealthy addiction to travel. At home all i think about is the next place to go....

We Started this blog to keep family posted while backpacking through Thailand in 2009.

Currently planning a trip to Australia on a work and holiday visa.

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller

Reasons I travel:
1. To find myself. To remind myself what is important in life. Not money, my job, my truck or clothes. Life is about people. Getting rid of your belongings and taking up life on the road with just you and what you carry on your back must be the most liberating feeling in the world. ( i don't really know since im not geting rid of EVERYTHing. But i bet it feels very freeing. lol)
2. To push my boundaries, get out of my comfort zone. Experience/see life the way other people do in the world.
3. To meet people
4. Because it is what i truly LOVE to do. It makes life new, exciting and spontaneous. To experience things I can only dream about working a desk job.
5. To Educate myself. To see and experience things firsthand, not read just about them.

Places I would like to visit: Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Turkey, Tibet, Vietnam, Indonesia, Micronesia, Oz, and New Zealand.

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Gold Coast » Surfers Paradise December 29th 2010

Today I sit on my balcony and watch the surf. The only thing that could make this any better is if you could see the sky. Here Iam 2 blocks from a beautiful beach and great surf and it hasnt stopped raining for over 5 days. Its quite a tragety. BUT..im am still so very happy to Finally have somewhere comfortable to stay and not have to stay in dirty, crowded, loud hostels. I have a room to myself, with and oceanview balcony, a washing machine and my very own closet! (funny how you miss the simple things) also I have FREE internet and a surfboard. PEEERRRRFEEECCT. Was waiting for the rain to stop, but decided to go out surfing today (im going to get wet anyhow) and it was so nice to be out in ... read more

So catching up on the last week or so. Ryan arrived last friday around noon. We had lunch, wandered around town, got some groceries for the week and headed down to the beach to watch the sunset. While we walked I was talking sooo much, telling him everything that has happened in the past month that we havent seen eachother and he pretended to be interested (just kidding. he may have been interested, but was probably tired of waiting for me to stop talking. I bet he was thinking "gees, Ive already waited 5 years, why dont you just talk for a few more hours!" haha) but i went on and on about ridiculous things and then finally i ran out of things to say and he was finally able to get a word in. At ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Port Arthur December 13th 2010

Port Arthur was a convict settlment in from 1830 to 1877. Most of the convicts were sent to the Island from England, some were sent from Ireland, even north America. Some were sent for suspision of theft, others for more serious crimes. Some were very young, and some very old. The historic site of Port Arthur contains 30 or more buildings that made up the original settlement. There was a hospital, church, officers quarters, and insane asylm, a guard tower and more. All the structures except for the insane aslym (built later) was constructed by convict labor. There were many very sad stories about the fate of many prisoners. Prisoners that diobeyed officers were tied to a triangle shaped post and given up to 100 lashes with a cat-o-nine, which was a whip with nine strips ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Bay of Fires December 12th 2010

On the east coast of Tasmania, I started at Bay of Fires. This is where i camped, and the beach was amazing. I did notice, there were many blue-bottles (jellyfish) washed up on the beach. Not that I was considering getting in the water because it was FREEZING. I cant belive people swim in that water! It is so gorgeous, though. Supposed to be good surfing here, too, but so far I havnt seen any swell. The next day I contined down the coast to Wineglass bay, which is the first picture in my blog. Probably the best thing about Tasmania, is that there is no one here. And My absolute favorite thing i did/saw here was camp right above the beach that is pictured second. The Most amazing beach and there was hardly anyone else ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Stanley December 9th 2010

"Launceston? Dont go there. Its a hole." Well im happy to report Launceston actually isnt a hole, contrary to what people have told me. I found enough to keep me entertained for two days while I worked out getting a car. I visited Cataract Gorge, which was cool. Also, I went to the park where the japaneese monkeys are... random, i know. Im not sure why or how they are there. (but they are in a cage, thankfully. Monkeys are so creepy.) I Did some wine tasting and saw alot of the countryside, thanks to my new friend Jacqui. So all in all it was pretty good. From there I headed north to Stanley. (sorry- Im about to sum up the last week in one entry) So I made it up to Stanley, a little seaside ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Launceston December 7th 2010

Met a girl on couchsufer and she invited me to a ukelele party her firends were having, which was good fun. Her friends were both 20-something but their uke group ( H.U.G. Hobart Unkelele Group) was made up of people over the age of 60... BUT, it was fun and they were very good. Had my first taste of pavelova (have no idea if that is how it is spelled) but it is very Australian and is basically a light cake with whipped cream and fruit on top. Its fantastic. Then Jacqui (my new Australian friend) invited me over to stay at her parents for the night and for dinner and they made a delicious rice lamb and veggies and it was wonderful to have a good meal. Since i have been here i have been ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Hobart December 3rd 2010

Someone I met the other day suggested I visit Bonorong Wildlife park where you can watch them feed the Tasmania devils and you can feed and pet kangaroos and wallabies, which I was very excited to do. Not much else to say about that except that it was a looong walk to this place, in the rain. but it was worth it.... read more

Did i mention that I LOVE TASMANIA!? Ive been neglecting my blog for awhile because i have been out exploring, so here is the scoop on the last few days.. I didnt want to do any organized tours, so I have just been taking the bus around the city and surrounds. One day I spent most of the day walking around the harbor shops and spend alot of time in an antique book store. Then the next day I took a bus to the historic Georgian villiage of Richmond which was built by the convicts that made up the colony in 1838. Pretty much all the buildings in Hobart were build by convicts and they are so beautiful. i went to the Richmond prison and they have stories posted on the wall about the inmmates that ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Hobart November 28th 2010

Arrived in Tasmania Lastnight. Its COLD here! had to buy a jacket today. Im really excited about being here in Tasmania! I think it is going to redeam my disappointment so far with Australia. Hobart seems like a really cool town. There is alot of really old buildings, museums, a beautiful harbor and plenty of shopping. I spend the day wandering around the town and made it down to the harbor. There were a couple big black ships that caught my eye and upon closer look they turned out to be two boats from the Sea Sheperd fleet from the TV Show "Whale Wars". I wasnt going to pay to go onboard or even wait in line for that matter, but as i was going by a man said i could jump to the front of ... read more

So I went to Ilbilbie to work on this farm for a week, when I arrived it was raining for the 5-6th straight day. (Which was really getting old since it has rained about 10 days out of the 15 days ive been in Australia.) When I got to Ilbilbie they had gotten 10 inches of rain in four days so there was a river where the road to their house used to be, and with it still raining it was looking like I wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon… When I first saw the river over the road I though “they are not really going to cross this, are they?” and my second thought when I realized they were was “these people are crazy- I just might like them!” the water was moving really fast and ... read more
