David and Beth were my original fruit picking contacts. However, when I had first called them, they didn't need any extra pickers, so they gave me the number for Koolkuna. After 3 weeks at the berry farm, I was collected by Campbell and taken to Balnagowan Organic farm. Balnagowan is in Walcha, whose small country town is a half hour drive away. It is a working sheep and cattle farm, as well as being an Organic farm employing backpackers and marketing fruits such as zuccinis (corgettes to us Brits), yellow button squash, potatoes, snow peas, beans and shalots. On the farm live David and Beth, who are parents to Kristin (residing on Norfolk Island), Angus, Zoe and Campbell. David and Beth both picked the fruit with us and gave us other jobs to do. From Tamworth, I was collected by Lother and taken an hour away, to the berry farm in Niangala. Here, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, amongst others during the season, are picked. The fellow pickers were Emily and Robyn (Ozzie), Colin (NZ), Jamie (Pom), Troy (Romananian/Oz) and Jerome. After me arrived Japanese Dai and Kaori, who I loved hanging out with and learning Japanese! John came along to do maintenence, once Glen had returned to Uni. We would begin picking (mainly blackberries but back-breaking strawberries for one hour each morning) around 8am, depending when the fruit was dry. Every hour, the fruit would get sorted into ... read more

A week early for the infamous Country Music Festival began, I intended to get a job to see me through the festival. I had completed my Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course to assist me, but I ended up with a position that involved giving air-brush tattoos to the public during the festival. The days were long but fun and I made sure I made up for the work by partying hard in the evenings! My accomodation during the festival was a bunkbed in the open-air car-port of the YHA. I didn't meet many fellow backpackers, as I generally came in after them and got up before them! Before the festival, the ... read more

Well, i'm leaving tomorrow and it is all a little surreal. I arrived back up here about 10 days ago. If it wasn't for my mum and Cathy i never would have made it out od Canberra - Thanks! I've lost and found many things this week. I've managed to get almost everything that i needed to do done, even some Christmas presents.. no cards though - sorry about that! I will be leaving tomorrow at 0945 out of Tamworth Airport for Sydney, then Sydney to LA. To keep me company i will have Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, ear plugs and a sleeping mask! I've had "Christmas" lunch with my grandmother and my parents and sisters (little brother couldn't get away from school) and given all my copies of my thesis away. It ... read more
