Sydney Opera House
Here is the opera house in the morning light. 2/23/08 - On Saturday we planned an early wake up so we could get things all done but it got pushed back a little we ended up leaving about 9:00am. We took the train down to Circular Quay (pronounced “key”) and went to the Opera House to exchange the date of the tickets we bought.
OH PS everyone We are going to see AS YOU LIKE IT and the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE on it’s closing night…..very cool!!!!!! Then we walked around the harbour to the Rocks market. It turned out to be very touristy but I was glad that I didn’t have any cash on me because I might have bought a lot of things. I sure did like a lot of things. I’m already thinking about souvenirs to get people. Then we got really hungry and walked around but all of the places were too expensive in that really high class touristy area. So we walked a bit further and found the Café that we had eaten at before. The exciting thing is that we are beginning to feel like we know where things are in the city and actually spent this whole day almost without looking a a map
Queen Victoria
Here is the brand new Queen Victoria moored in Darling Harbour. going exactly where we wanted to go. I had a toasted sandwich on Turkish bread that had grilled chicken, capsicum (red bell peppers), swiss cheese and a sweet chili sauce.
Then we caught the train back home. I am feeling proficient about traveling on the train as well. The next thing I need to learn is the bus. I walked with Sarah and Sam across campus to St. Johns (their college (residence)) and helped them move from their temporary rooms to their real shared room. They have a great view of the city and sports fields out their window. It also has the perfect big ledge as a window sill to sit on and enjoy looking out the window or reading a book. While they unpacked I sat in the window sill enjoying the breeze. Then I walked home and rested for a little bit before going to dinner with Michelle and some other people from the House. We walked over to King St. and had some delicious Thai food for a very reasonable price. I had veggies and Tofu with a peanut sauce for 9 dollars.
2/24/08 - Sarah and I made the insane decision to try and
Queen Elizabeth the 2nd
Here is the about to retire QE2 moored on the other side of the botanical gardens. see the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship come into harbor at sunrise this morning. It didn’t work because we didn’t want to walk to the train station in the dark so we got their to see it docked in the morning light. We also got some good pictures of the Opera House and Queen Victoria cruise ship aswell. Tonight was the Royal Rondeavous where the two cruise ships passed by each other in the harbour. It marked the retirement of the QE2 and the maiden voyage of the Queen Victoria. It was a big event in Sydney.
After taking pictures of the docked ships we walked to Paddy’s Market in China town where there was basically a huge flea market type thing under a shopping mall. It was fully of people and trinkets. I was looking for a cute top and Sarah was looking for a pretty dress. Unfortunately we came up empty handed. I walked home and Sarah went back to the Circular Quay to wait for the Royal Rondeavous.
At 3o’clock we had a house orientation. We were introduced briefly to each other and had to listen to all the rules. A rabbi came to tell us about what keeping Kosher means. Smokey the campus security guy came to tell us the same speech he told us internationals at orientation. And then the RAs lead us through some get to know you activities. We were divided into teams and then sent on a scavenger hunt through our things and around the house. Our team name was the Winners and we definitely won. The next game was a fashion show with the theme of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
If you have not seen this movie you should it’s hilarious. And by the by we won that event as well. Then we had an Aussie Barbie with hamburgers and chicken and beef sausage. It was okay but the sausages were kinda dry.
After dinner I watched some tv and got to know some new people in the house. Elisa is at her first year of Uni and seems like a swell chica. Now I’m watching Pride and Prejudice for the second time in two days and in my life and getting ready for bed. I’m excited for what this week will bring.
