Wednesday 24th January
Wow…….I know we’ve been going on about the flights, but listen to this. We arrived at Kuala Lumpur International airport and began to check-in at the business class counter. Graham asked the guy checking us in if there were any first class upgrades available on our flight to which the man asked if we wanted to pay the difference or were expecting a complimentary upgrade. We said we would pay but he said we didn’t have to do and continued to upgrade us free of charge with compliments…..cool eh?
Bear in mind once we found out the cost we would have left it !!
We got into the first class lounge and tucked into king prawn canopies and other posh foods. Tracey then began washing it down with Dom Perignon champagne, all courtesy of Malaysian Airlines……thank you very much.
Upon entering the first class cabin of the aircraft, it can only be best describes as ‘out of this world’ as far as air travel goes. We thought business class was wonderful, but this really is something else. There are a couple of photos here of the amount of legroom we had ( note: we had 4 windows
each which have electronically operated blinds at the push of a button !!!) , and after our evening meal, the seat electronically adjusted to a complete 6’ 3” flatbed complete with blankets and duvets and luxury pillows. Oh, and by the way, the cabin crew made our beds for us to top it off.
Upon arriving at Sydney, we were greeted with rain and cloud. Tracey dropped my lovely light blue jacket on the floor outside in the rain so we’ve had to find a dry cleaners to get it cleaned. Women ! I tell thee!
Wednesday afternoon here in Sydney can only best be described as being manic with passers by….er…….passing by at a rate of about 300 per minute or something crazy like that. Walking down the street was near impossible with several “near-misses reported” by almost walking into someone hurtling the opposite direction…..and we thought London was mad.
Found an Indian restaurant in the city centre for some tea, but after peering though the windows and seeing nobody sat inside, we hot-footed it away thinking that perhaps it hasn’t got the best reputation in the Southern hemisphere. We took a cab up to
a neighbourhood called Wooloomooloo and found somewhere that sold nice fission chips while Tracey scoffed a chicken dish which was reasonably priced at about £6.50 each. Beer is cheaper than the Hard Rock Café in KL for sure so that’s a bit easier on the pocket. But then again Tracey is making up for it with the shopping she’s managing to fit into our busy itinerary.
Thursday 25th January
Weather today is still not brilliant as its cloudy and overcast here, but at least the rain has held off. Temperature is around 24c so its definitely t-shirt and shorts weather. We hadn’t really planned on going to the zoo here in Sydney but as its not the best weather for lazing on the beach we thought we’d give it a go. The zoo is situated on the other side of the harbour bridge so we took a taxi over and the views once you’re in the zoo of the Sydney area are stunning. There are animals here which we’ve never seen before, the ‘Red Kangaroo’ and the ‘Tasmanian Devil’ to name but a few. The Giraffes are amusing as they stroll around their enclosure almost seeming to be
enjoying posing for the cameras, so we took quite a few snaps of them, one of which is here.
The Koala Bears are cute as they cling to the branches whilst sleeping the day away. After we strolled around we came to the Gorilla section of the zoo, where young and old Gorillas played. Whilst turning the camcorder on we heard this loud ‘thud’ sound and then a fight broke out amongst two of them as they fought over who should have the tasty branch to eat. The loud ‘thud’ was indeed one Gorilla thumping his counterpart in the middle of its back and when this happened a loud ‘awwww’ was heard from the watching tourists. Fortunately, it seemed none the worse for its wallop and so things quickly calmed down a few minutes later.
As we walked around the zoo, we decided to catch the ferry back across the water instead of a taxi and got some more good photos of the city and its iconic landmarks. At the city side of the ferry terminal were some Aboriginees playing the didgeridoo whom you could have your photo taken with so Tracey had hers taken. We also bought
a cd with their music on which is pretty cool.
We had to be back for just after 4pm to collect Graham’s jacket from the dry-cleaners (seeing as Tracey dropped it on the wet road at the airport) so we headed back to the city centre via a bus after disembarking from the ferry.
Friday 26th January
Picked our hire car up today and drove to Bondi beach and then Manly beach in the afternoon. Weather has picked up lovely and not a cloud in the sky for most of the day. Had a great meal at a seaside café at manly beach and watched the world go by as the sun began to set behind us. Drove over the Sydney harbour bridge on our way back to the hotel and things are getting hectic now later in the day as locals are celebrating Australia day here and the streets are getting crowded. Having to pack up our things again now in preparation to leave first thing in the morning for our trip south down to a resort called Jervis Bay about 3 hours drive from here.
