I made a few trips into Austin while I was staying in San Marcos. I went in twice to the Alamo Drafthouse Movie Theatre to see a movie. Tad and Holly got me a gift card to there for Christmas. It is a theatre that serves dinner and drinks during the movie so I enjoyed the evening out. I made the drive in before rush hour and then driving back wasn't too bad by the time the movie was out. I found that Texas cities have a lot of traffic and all the drivers go at least 10 miles over the speed limit. I made one day trip into Austin and did the Hop On Hop Off bus to see the city attractions. I got to see the famous 6th Street where the music scene is ... read more

I played with manatees in Crystal River, haven't done that for about 8 years. It's a rare and exciting experience, but the place has changed. Some people take the eco-conservation attitude to absurd levels. I got yelled at (literally) by some dingus for swimming beneath the surface of the water. Snorkeling is permitted, but apparently the snorkel must always be breaching the surface. Because people diving down to get a closer look is going to cause certain extinction. I couch surfed in Tallahassee for a few nights, reliving the college experience with some very welcoming hosts. I was lucky enough to see my aunt and uncle in Mississippi. More more love love! We had a little adventure getting lost in a swamp with the dogs. Family is important, it's you're identity. Love your family!! Between these ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743Spent our last night at La Quinta because we had an early flight to Costa Rica........6:30 which meant getting to the airport at 4:30! Used Pronto taxi service because we could a pickup in advance and our driver showed up early!Travel tip- always try curbside check inGot to the airport and tried our luck with curbside check in. We were able to check in there but did have to rearrange some of our items in our bags. Robert is never over on his checked bag until today. His bag weighed 57 and Laura's was 51. The curbside is much more generous with your bags being over a bit in our experience Took the big purple dry sack, first aid kit, peanut butter and horseradish out of Robert's. Put the purple dry sack into Laura's ... read more

Christmas Letter - 2016 Dear Friends and Family, Most of you know that I have been living at Brookdale Gaines Ranch, a senior-living community in Austin, Texas, since last January. Thanks to Erika, my interior decorator, business manager, medical confidant, morale booster, half of my vacation-planning team, mother of my oldest grandson (Daniel, age 11), and my loving and supportive daughter. I am happy in my stimulating environment that provides intellectual and cultural programs, daily exercise options both in and out of the pool, outings to dinner/theater, movies, horse races, “bat” cruises, weekly in-house live music/happy hour, new friends, kind staff, good food, and … well, this is why I now consider this is my new home. Matt and his wife, Megan, are the second half of my vacation-planning team. Their son, Cash (age 3) and ... read more

Austin Day One On the first day, we arrived and took an uber to our friends apartment where we settled in. Shortly after we went to Salt Lick for an amazing barbecue and southern experience. Day Two After waking up and taking our time we ventured out to the city of Austin. We drove through the strip focusing on the centre, the state capital. We drive through many districts enroute to Mount Bonell. Once on top of the mountain we walked along the ridge taking pictures of the city and million dollar homes along the Colorado river. The three of us then drove back to the city to go into different shops including the staple Tom Toms, Whole foods, Allens boots to find cowboy boots and enjoy some lunch at a Tex Mex place. We also ... read more

The self proclaimed "most liberal city" of Texas. It's this line that drew us here, and had us miss Texan cities such as Houston and Dallas. We were aware of the differences between the north and the south but never really knew how deep it went. Apparently Austin is the trailblazer for forward thinking and acceptance of all people of colour, gender and sexual orientation. We think the popular 6th street, lined with bars and pubs with happy hours offering large cocktails probably helped. When attempting to book accommodation for Austin, we found it incredibly difficult to find somewhere affordable and close to downtown. Turns out, our time here is right in the middle of one of the 2 biggest music festivals in Texas. This one became so popular its now on 2 separate weekends. Austin ... read more

Geo: 30.2672, -97.7431 Because we are using free air mile tickets, the times were less than perfect. Our flight from Austin left at 5:00 a.m. which meant we got up at 2:30 a.m. and headed to the airport at 3:30.Check in was a little confusing as you had to use the kiosk to self check in and then check your baggage. The flight to Miami was smooth and without any problemsThey called for our flight to Miami and we got on board only to have a two hour flight delay on the runway at Miami, but luckily we were able to use the AirBnB email/text and easily get a message to Johnny that we would be late. One of the issues was a maintenance issue that had to be repaired and the second problem was Cuba ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743Most of the more significant incidents in U.S. history are immortalized with some sort of memorial and/or museum but the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco might be the one exception. Eighty two Branch Davidian followers and 4 ATF agents were killed in the siege which ended when the compound burned down. Apparently there is a plaque that sits near the residual of the burned buildings but it is on private property now and the reception has been reported as a little hostile so we gave it a pass (it also seemed a touch ghoulish for us to visit). I suspect that the tragedy is still a little raw and given the controversy around who was at fault for the ending, it may be some time before there is any formal recognition of the event. ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743 We got up on Wednesday morning and headed to downtown Austin. We went to the Bullock Texas State History Museum. It is a huge museum. We spent about 3 hours there. It has all of the history about the area before and after Texas became a state. After that, we went over to the state capitol. They have a great state capitol, larger than ours. On Thursday morning, we packed up everything and headed over to our hotel that came with our race package. We couldn't stay there on Tuesday and Wednesday because they were booked for those days. It is a really fancy hotel. At 4:00PM, we boarded a bus for the track. We had special tickets to visit the Legends Club at the track. First of all we were allowed to ... read more

It only seems like yesterday I was played my first game for the mighty Christies Beach Primary School Tigers Under 10's. You no the kid that stands out on the ground and stares at his boot laces and reacts to the ball when it has already past him? Yep, that was me! Well, to start with anyway. I still remember taking a mark in the back pocket and had the choice: handball to two free Christies boys or kick the ball to the best player surrounded by 10 players wearing the red and blue Pimpala guernsey. Yep, you guessed it! I kicked it and it went to one of the Pimpala boys who then kicked a goal. Funny thing was, I didn't care! I had got a kick and back then, just getting a touch made ... read more
