I know it’s asking a lot to be able to wake up and have a nice peaceful uneventful morning on the road, but that’s still what I want and I just know it will happen, but it will have to wait until tomorrow ! I would venture to say that 99% of the time I am the first one to get up and get things crackin’ while we’re traveling in the motor home. Yes, it’s because I’m a girl and it takes me so much longer to get beautified than it does for a boy. You would think that I would learn to start letting Tim get in the shower first just in case there’s some kind of fiasco lurking around just waiting to happen ! Tim got up 30 minutes prior to bath time and cut on the hot water heater for me like he does most mornings and then hopped back into bed to catch a little more shut eye. I waited patiently, an ample amount of time, and then I made my way to the shower. The water was kinda luke warm at first and then it turned absolutely freezing cold and I mean Connecticut freezing cold !
Of course, I began screeching, but not too loud because I didn’t want to wake Jon. Tim jumps out of the bed to investigate why in the world there’s no hot water and after a few minutes he realizes that the propane was not turned on. It seems that yesterday, before he forced me to travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge / Tunnel, they made him park the RV, get out of it and turn the propane tanks completely off and he accidentally forgot to cut them back on last night. I’m telling you that is just my luck !! I don’t care how long it takes me to get ready tomorrow morning, somebody else is getting in the shower first ! All the commotion ended up waking Jon from his deep sleep but he didn’t seem to mind at all. We all finished getting ready and had breakfast in the motor home before we hit the road. Tim had his trusty ole bowl of oatmeal with blueberries, Jon had a bowl of cereal and I had a toasted wheat muffin with some homemade apple butter that we had bought yesterday at the fruit stand. Tim and Jon walked over
to Home Depot to pick up a few supplies and then we were off to see what the rest of Connecticut had to offer. For those of you who didn’t follow our trip last year, you need to know about this little book called “1000 Places to see in the USA and Canada Before You Die”. This book belongs to Tim’s cousin who let us borrow it last year and has so graciously allowed us to use it again this year. Lynn prides herself on being an avid traveler so it has become a competition, between her and me, as to who can see and mark off the most places in the book. She and Tim grew up traveling across America with his parents each Summer so she had a huge head start, but after our whirlwind trip last Summer and a few trips here and there, I think I may have caught up with her or perhaps I’ve even passed her. Well, on page 8 of the book there’s a small town called Essex and it’s just 40 miles Southeast of Hartford, CT so we decided we would check it out. We found the Essex Steam Train and took
a couple of pictures with it and then we headed on over to the Griswold Inn (both in the book). We wanted to eat lunch there but we were too early so I shopped for a little bit and then we made our way over to Chester and East Haddam. Oh yea, I stopped by the post office there and mailed out the first batch of postcards so be sure and keep an eye out for them. We were able to see the Goodspeed Opera House and Gillette Castle (both in the book) while in Chester and East Haddam. We were getting kinda hungry at this point so we referred to the book and it guided us to one of Connecticut’s “finest seafood institutions”. I had to call ahead first to make sure they had something other than seafood cause you know Tim Strain ain’t eating nothing that came from the ocean. She assured me that he could get something from the poultry or beef family so we made our way over to The Blue Oar. It was a quaint little place that sat just beyond the railroad tracks by a marina along the Connecticut River. We walked up a
small flight of stairs to enter the building and we look up and what do we see ??? THE BOOK ! They had it on display right there on top of the dessert case. I got all excited and took a picture to show Lynn and then we placed our orders. Indeed they did have some beef and that’s just what Tim ordered and Jon followed along in his Daddy’s footsteps and ordered a Blue Burger too. The consensus was that although the food was edible, there’s no way in the world this place could be one of Connecticut’s finest seafood institutions. We finished lunch and scurried on up that big ole hill we had to walk down and made our way on down the road. Little did I know that my husband had our next stop all planned out for us. Even though it is in the book, he said he didn’t need a book to get him to Foxwoods, the largest casino in the world. I really should have known that he would somehow find a way to fit a little bit of gambling into the trip. I swear this man has a casino detector built into his
brain and if I were a betting girl I would bet that this isn’t the only one he has plotted to see. I will have to say with 340,000 square feet of gambling space, this place was truly amazing. You know it’s big when they hand you a map as you enter the door ! We stayed and checked it out for a couple of hours and then we decided we needed to get back on the road because we wanted to make it to Rhode Island before nightfall. We headed down Highway 2 and a little ways down the road, I got in the kitchen (hehehe) and made us all some sandwiches for dinner. They hit the spot and the three of us just chilled out for a little while as Tim drove us up I-95 all the way to Wakefield, Rhode Island. Magellan was telling us that there weren’t many campgrounds around so we found Worden Pond Family Campground in Wakefield and decided to camp there for the night. I will say it was only around 8 o’clock and I was really glad that we were going to get settled in early and be able to relax and
just enjoy each other’s company for the night. Tim and Jon dumped the waste and filled up the water tanks and I cleaned up some and then we just took it easy the rest of the night ! We’re all super excited because tomorrow we’ll be headed towards Boston !! Hope you have a great day !
