"Jessi?? Are you awake?" I hear my roommate Anthony whisper through my door....well yes. I am quite awake actually. Even though it's 3am. So what do I owe this waking up to you ask? Well that would be our mouse hunt. Apparently he set the trap and the mouse ate the cheese but escaped with its life because the trap didn't set off. It was the mouse's lucky day I suppose. See we have this problem. It's called, the house is old (as in old victorian 100 year old - old) and it's cold outside. Cold enough that if I was a mouse, I'd come into a warm house if I could too. So these things find any hole they can, which we have in abundance by our ancient heaters and they scurry about our house. ... read more

We have a whole day between our Italy/Greece tour and the upcoming British Isles tour. It's not even enough time to reset my Circadian Rhythms and my internal clock. But it's a good thing that I fell asleep rather early and rose in the early dawn because we have a lot to do before leaving for JFK tomorrow. First on the list of to-do's was to get Zeta from the kennel. After almost three weeks it was nice to know the dog still recognized me. Too bad she wasn't any smarter after all that time at Dog Camp. Fortunately Zeta did not suffer one of her usual bouts with carsickness. After driving her home, it was time for Gail and I to cash in some bonds to subsidize Tyler's upcoming tuition. That's why we got them ... read more

No sooner do I finish documenting our Christmas vacation then it's time to get ready for the next trip. In less than a month we'll be doing one of Gail's student trips. This time we will be visiting Italy and Greece. In the past I would have started reading about our destinations months ahead of time. But I have become a bit jaded after taking ten previous EF tours. EF does such a complete job of organizing things and the tour directors keep us so busy that it is hardly necessary for me to familiarize myself with where we'll be going. I'm not saying that every second is regimented or that we get no free time, but you just never know when and where you'll be at any given time. We could spend an entire day ... read more

The mad rush for Philadelphia International Airport began as soon as Gail and Cassie got out of school. Grandma Phoebe had already joined us from South Carolina and we were meeting Tyler’s girlfriend, Gen, at the airport. My careful internet research paid off as we had no problems getting to PHL. That’s saying a lot too during snow season in the Pocono Mountains. Parking was a breeze. We were whisked from long term parking to the front door of the airport in a roomy bus. Since we like to check-in early, we had no lines to worry about being there 3 hours early. When we got to the check-in agent, the first words out of his mouth were “Would you be interested in volunteering for Denied Boarding Compensation…?” Before he could finish, Gail and I ... read more

Christmas in Germany 2005 Preface Growing up as a kid in the ‘60’s I always hated Sundays. Pennsylvania strictly enforced the old Blue Laws which meant everything was closed on Sundays. The few stores that dared to open were heavily fined by the State and quickly ceased that practice. Before cable came on the scene, we had our choice of three channels on the TV. On Sunday there was nothing to watch except the news commentary shows or tele-Evangelists. Worst of all, Sunday really stunk because I was never allowed to sleep-in like I could on Saturdays. We had to be up for Sunday school at 9:00 followed by church. Once that ordeal ended, it was time to go out for Sunday lunch with the family. Back in the ‘60’s chain restaurants hadn’t... read more

Planning After visiting Europe five times in the last four years as members of these group tours, it was with very eager anticipation that we started planning a Christmas trip to what we consider the “coolest” country in Europe. We decided that my recently widowed Mother-in-Law would make a great traveling companion. We really wanted to have my son’s college girlfriend join us too. I began working on our itinerary as soon as we returned from London in August. I was working within rather stringent time restraints because Cassie, Tyler and Gail could only travel during their Christmas break. They were going to be off from 23 December until 2 January. In addition to that rather short time period, I feared that everything (stores, museums, castles, parks, salt mines, restaurants) would be closed on Christmas and ... read more
