I guess all great adventures should start out with a challenge; it’s a question of how big of challenge do you want to tackle. My inconvenience was a potential deal breaker that was discovered at 11:30pm the night before my departure. My wallet, where is my wallet? Drivers license, debit card, credit card, and my REI membership and rock climbing cards were all missing. I began that agonizing process of replaying in my mind where I had gone and what I had done in the last 24 hours. Had I mistakenly packed the wallet in with my check luggage? Nope. Perhaps under the bed, behind the night stand, on the kitchen counter. Nope, no luck, gone…… After searching for thirty minutes I decided to give it a go in the morning. Perhaps I would be directed ... read more

It's time for the Club Crew World Championships of Dragonboating in Toronto! I should say "I can't believe it's already here" but I can. We have been dreaming, preparing, winning, celebrating, planning, fundraising, and most importantly, paddling for two years to prepare for this day. Our first goal was winning the west coast USA PDBA Championship in Long Beach in 2005. Once we accomplished that goal, we realized that the real challenge was still in front of us: Toronto. Every member of this team has put their full effort and energy into this goal, knowing that "The will to win is meaningless without the will to prepare." The preparation is done; now we're off to Toronto to make it happen. ... read more

Well, here I am, safe and sound back in Portland after 1800 miles. I'm a little bit skinnier and alot more hungry. I pretty much high tailed it home from east glacier, doing around a hundred miles each day. It was mostly pleasant besides the heavier traffic on the main roads. I took the shorter way home, only 800 miles, as opposed the 1000 mile path I took to get there. I now have five days to recooperate and ready myself to brave those anti americnan euro-terrorists accross the atlantic. I'll be waving my flag and hailing my dictator all the way accross their land of hedonism. Who needs the lights of Paris when you got the smog of Yakima, Washington? Peace and pumkin pie, Steve... read more

Hello again everyone Writing today from the beautiful Portland city library, a lovely 19th Century municipal library of high ceilings and neo classical facards. It also has the distinction of being the only place where I have been caught in a stampeed, for a public library! This may be to do with the free internet (thank you Portland founding fathers there). There was literally a tidal wave of smelly travellers and even smellier Hobos crashing through the gates at 10am, winner. Been doing even more walking yesterday. Round a city centre park that was almost the size of Cambridge and contained 200 miles of forest trails, in a city centre park! Things are certainly bigger in America. As we're heading south its getting hotter, Portland is 4 hours drive south of Seattle and its a lot ... read more

We reluctantly left Opal Creek after only one day, but were looking forward to spending time with one of Michelle's old friends from Corpus Christi and his fiance - Justin and Madeline. on the evening of the 30th we caught up and went to a late dinner. The next morning Justin, Michelle, and I woke up and took my car to a mechanic because we discovered the night before that it was leaking gas. We then went for coffee. We returned to the condo (with one of the best views in the city - you could see both mount st. helen's, mt. hood, and much of the cascade range), we picked up the sleeping beauties, olivia and madeline, and went down to the waterfront to check out a blues festival and the outdoor market. we found ... read more

Driving up to Seattle today, it finally hit me. In 5 short days, I will be boarding a plane from PDX to Bangkok, and will be embarking on my 53 day "thats fake #2" trek around Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Tibet. Although the specific details of my trip won't be finalized until I arrive in Bangkok, I feel pretty set on the following preliminary itinerary; July 3rd-4th - Fly from PDX to BKK July 5th - Rest in BKK, and soak in the comforts of Khao San Lu. July 6th - Travel from BKK - Siem Reap, Cambodia (via the Poipet/Aranya Prathet Crossing) July 7th - 9th - Check out the sites of Angkor Wat and surroundings July 10th - Travel from Siem Reap to Ban Lung July 11th - Visit Ratanakiri Province including; Boen Yeak ... read more

It's in the triple digits here in Portland. A little strange for this area. So far it's been mostly Simpsons-clouds and blue skies, but I guess occasionally (everyone here attributes it to global warming) it gets pretty hot. With no a/c in the house, I'm glad to be sitting in class! Although, it definitely could be worse. Like Texas heat. Currently, July 18th, it is nice and no more than 85 degrees so far this week. Just about perfect! So this will be my last entry for the meantime as I guess I'll be here for some time (and no, Mr. C- even though I don't know what I'm looking for I may have found it here, so the traveling and rambling will come to an end. but no worries, i have plans for more to ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well we have finally decided to leave Oregon. Oregon was so amazingly beautiful everywhere that we went but the weather was less than desirable. We have weathered five long days on rain with no let up in sight but our spirits are still high that the sun will make an apperance soon. We spent a week touring around Oregon, hitting the major cities and the coastal regions. After leaving Florence, where we spent two glorious rainy days (but at least we did not have to set up and break down our gear) we headed up the Pacific Coast highway to see the Northern Coast of Oregon. It was so beautiful. I could spend forever sitting on the shores of the Pacific without a second thought. The coast gets a lot rockier the further north ... read more

The Park is on the northern coast of Oregon, and occupies a peninsula with Nehalem Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. On the upper third of the peninsula, which is about 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, are located a campground, a day-use area with beach access, and an airstrip. The Park has 265 campsites with water and electrical hookups, 6 campsites at the airstrip for fly-in campers, several tent sites for hikers and bicyclists and 18 “Yurts”. A Yurt is a circular tent (approximately 15’ in diameter) with a wooden frame and floor and a large partially-covered deck with picnic table. They are quite nice and are very popular, especially with tent campers on rainy nights. Finally, there is a horse camp with 17 primitive sites, each with 2 ... read more

Staying at Katie's mom and step dad's house in Vancouver Washington. Nice place, funny dog, good food, great family. Havent been doing much activities in portland which is a nice break. Figured this is the one place we will probably come back to in the future. Went to Best Buy and got another XM radio which accomplishes the one goal I had for this trip. Went downtown to check out the sights. There are alot of bridges in Portland. Something Edmonton could learn from!!... read more
