Well, it's 6:30 am our time, and we've come up with a plan B. Ray has been checking the DOT road closure line, looking at the Oregon fire maps, and googling potential scenic routes. The fires are all in the Western part of the state, right where we have been, or were going. We were actually lucky that we were able to get from the coast to Sisters yesterday, as most of those roads are closed. There's a tremendously large fire burning southeast of Portland, with many towns being evacuated. We've decided to head East along Rt 26, toward Baker City. There are no fires out there, and it appears to be very scenic and mountainous. We're going to wing it on RV parks for tonight, as we don't know where we'll end up. This is ... read more

Today was a day we have both been been looking forward to for many days. It was going to be a recovery day after the last two hard days. It was a downhill day from the start following the John Day River downstream from Prairie City to Dayville. It was a beautiful ride through the John Day valley. We passed huge ranches filled with lush grazing grasslands. Although we were told we would most likely see some wildlife, we saw none. The traffic was very light so that was a big plus! I did pull a complete bonehead mistake today! It is silly in retrospect, but sure had me going for a bit. Right from the start today, I just didn’t have it. It was supposed to be downhill but every pedalstroke was an effort. Sometimes ... read more

So if I have to count today, I have 8 days left until my vacation starts. I have 4 shifts left at work, one staff meeting, and one more week of school. Midnight Saturday marks the actual start of time off work, but the Last day of class is the following Monday. The gas prices are getting high again. Maybe they will peek this week and taper off next week. I can go to GasBuddy.com to get the best prices for whereever I have to gas up. It's a good thing I have the option to borrow a fuel efficient vehicle for this trip; my truck would have sucked up so much gas. 8 days and counting........ read more

This is my first travel blog, though this is most certainly not my first traveling experience. I grew up in Michigan, and have visited Ohio, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, California, and Key West. Key West was my last mom-cation destination. Maybe I should explain the term mom-cation. Of course, if you are a single mother....or single parent period, you may already have a pretty good idea what this is. For those who are not, it is a period of time dedicated to the self in order to regroup, relax, and reaffirm that we are doing our best. Stress is a killer, and it is my firm belief as a stress management specialist each and everyone of us need to put as much emphasis on ... read more

I'm writing this from Tokyo....little transfer between few flights on our way back home. Markets are in deep panics, so back online to work a lot...and less time for travelblog....and it could get worst soon, so bear in mind with us for the next entries... After the vineyards of Walla Walla we are crossing Oregon on the back roads. In one day, we drove from Walla Walla to Prineville. Prineville is a little highway town in the middle of nowhere, with the only benefit of having clean and cheap hotels on the highway, I concede, not really original. But the aim of today was to go deeper in the cowboy world. We drove for hours in amazing landscapes. We didn't see any indian, but we met many of the cowboys. We spent some time in Canyon ... read more

August 2-3, 2010: One of the things I did manage to get packed into the van was a paperback I suspect I picked up at a yardsale -- Pacific NorthWest: Travel Smart Trip Planner. Flipping through it in our motel room in Hood River, I saw that it dealt mainly with coastal trips, but it did have a chapter called “A Perfect Day in John Day Country”. It gave an itinerary for visiting the several fossil sites of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. “Now that's something different,” I thought. Apparently in the wake of the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species, evolution advocates from Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton and the University of California raced expeditions to the desert of Oregon and ended up shipping hundreds of crates of astonishing fossils, ... read more
