As I explore so many wonderful places around the Bend area I find myself falling more and more in love with this place. It comes over me in waves and is caused by the littlest things, like the way the residents are so warm and friendly. When you pass by people walking they look you in the eye, smile and say hello. There is something about the elevation that makes the sky more brilliant - when it is blue it is a deep rich blue, when the sunrises (yes I have been up that early!) it is a brilliant pink, and sunset is a painting of autumn colors. The views, anywhere you look you see mountains in the distance. The smell - much like a campground with fresh pine. The way the city has grown since ... read more

Bend is a city sitting at 4000 feet in the high desert in Oregon, around 2-3 hours drive from Portland. The scenery is pretty wicki wicki wild wild west round here. Bend is a bit of an MTB mecca in the US but doesn't seem to hold the status in the UK of Moab in Utah or Fruita in Colorado. Like Whistler it has numerous shops where a great trail map is available with topography, recommended routes etc, we didn't get lost once and minimum stopping to read the map was required. I imagine Bend would be popular with the singletrack type crowd too, lots of nice eateries, a great sandwich and bottle shop with a cycling theme and several local breweries that sell jerseys with their brew names on. There are loads of bikes in ... read more

I just moved to Bend, Oregon and so far I'm loving everything about it! My move started with a nearly 1000 mile drive from San Diego. My Dad and I did it together with help from our adorable little 10' Budget truck. Being in a car with nothing to do but think lends itself to some good introspection, so we had some great talks. It took us two days with a stop at a little hotel run by a family who's technique for verifying the guests had checked out was to go outside and peer in room to room. (At least that is what we think he was doing! Did I mention how glad I was to have my Dad there?) We drove up I-5 until we crossed into Oregon, at which point we took Hwy ... read more

I decided to forego the trip to Crater Lake to spend most of the day with family again because that was more important. That was why we came and I'm glad that we did that. I copied the pictures that Mariann had taken on Sunday so they wouldn't have to try and send them later and will post a few. It was an emotional goodbye for everyone for sure. We finally left around 4:30 though to try and get a little distance in for the day and stopped in a little town called Lakeview. We will start heading through Nevada then towards California next. ... read more

We had a very quiet morning and just rested. I talked with my cousins and we arranged a time to meet. Ed and Rhonda had been out camping with their motorcycle club and were going to come in the afternoon and Rick was going to see how many of his kids he could round up and bring. So we got to Aunt Mary's around noon and Mariann was waiting for us to get there. We got out and Aunt Mary was standing on the porch too..she knew that the boys and I were coming as they had told her that just to prepare her that they were going to have visitors...and then Dad walked up and she looked at him a bit then said "Are you MY Joe???" and then she grabbed him and hugged him ... read more

Welcome to my travel blog! After years of dreaming of all of the places I have read about, I am finally embarking on the journey of a lifetime. My brother had a catastrophic accident last May and I realized that I can't put it off any longer. Beginning April 12, 2008, I will sail from the U.S to South America, cross the southern Atlantic trade route, curve around west Africa into the Mediterranean and then spend the remaining days cruising the Mediterranean. Once on land, I am heading by train to Paris, London and Edinburgh. This trip is thematic in terms of family, or faith, and possibilities. I am visiting every country that constructed my DNA, following ley lines to sacred sites, and tracing the historical routes of the explorers. It is my intention that my ... read more

My restless feet have been twitching fiercely since the return from Ireland in 2006. The coming of Mia Azul postponed any 2007 travel plans but we're all three armed with passports now and once again ready to travel. Our current adventure is a road trip to Mexico. I will be traveling with 5 year old Erika and 4 month old Mia. Our journey will cover approximately three weeks with travel time and vacation. The latest plan goes something like this: Feb 29th: Depart Bend 3:30pm for Yuba City, CA where we'll spend the night with Kara and Justin Mar 1st: Leave Kara's place late afternoon and head for San Diego and stay with Barney and Veronica Mar 2nd: Park car on the US side of US:Mexico border and walk across the border with two suitcases, stroller, ... read more

I have done it again, and left it too late to update the blog. I didn’t keep a diary, and dates and a lot of details have escaped through the sieve of my mind. So, I am bunching the rest of our Oregon holiday into this one entry. Three Capes Loop: Cape Mears State Park, Cape Lookout State Park, Cape Kiwanda State Park When we woke up in Pacific City, we went back to the Pelican pub brewery where we had dinner and were blown away with the views that were just a curtain of black when we had had dinner. The brew pub is right on the beach front, and what an amazing beach. Unfortunately they let 4 wheel drives on this one to. I get quite upset about this. Beaches should be left alone. ... read more

When I finally left Crater Lake on thursday night, twilight bathed the forest and peaks in a calm blue light. After some curves through the forest, the road made an abrupt right turn. Ahead of me was 30 km of a downhill and lonely road, which I proceeded to test the maximum speed of my VW Golf yet again. 180 km/h was the maximum velocity, which had to save me at least 4 minutes on the 3 hour drive! For over 140,000 miles across the great American West this car has travelled, yet still it performed. I chain smoked cigarettes, burned through one after another like each one I smoked got me closer to enlightenment. I was exhausted and hungry by the time I got to Bend, but that didn't stop me from going to a ... read more
