Before I start on today’s events, I want to do some catchup comments about the previous two days. As you are probably aware, the US is famous for the plethora of billboards. A couple I noticed were in Missouri. The first was a very irritating advert about Uranus. What’s so unusual about that you ask? Well, there’s a big candy store called Uranus and the billboards (so many of them!) asked “ Can’t find Uranus?” or “The Best Fudge is in Uranus”. I certainly didn’t feel the urge to visit that store and was happy to see the last of the billboards. It seems Missouri has a very modern attitude towards drugs. The first ad I saw was “Mushrooms - for the psychedelic curious” and the next one was for “Rock Joints” (not marijuana - not ... read more

Geo: 35.5261, -98.7072Erin wanted to be at the airport by 9 a.m. so we picked her up and got there quickly. After dropping her off, we went back to our hotel for breakfast and to check out leaving about 11:30. We went to the Outlet Shoppes to look around and picked up a pair of gloves for our winter trip. Stopped for lunch at BJs just outside the mall. We left to go to Weatherford about 12:30 and called Brad and Jeanine to let them know that we were on the way. It is so nice to spend time with them, friends since about 1976. We don't get together often enough, but I always find it so easy to be around them. Wish we could see them more.During the afternoon, we went to the Stafford Air ... read more

DEDICATION The Hysterical Journey to Historic Places is dedicated to the fond remembrance of Alan Dail Markum. I only knew him for a short while many years ago in the army. We were in the same platoon in D-4-4 during Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lenard Wood, MO between November of 1967 and January of 1968. Alan had just graduated with honors from law school and had joined the Oklahoma Army Reserve in order to avoid the draft and a tour of duty in Vietnam. That sort of thing normally enraged those of us in the regular army, but Alan had such a wonderful personality that he was forgiven and actually became a sort of beloved mascot among us. He had a peculiar gait, and it was painfully difficult sometimes for him ... read more

OK, it would take a week to do Tulsa properly so we decided that we wouldn't do anything in Tulsa, apart from drive through on 11th Street (Route 66)!! There is just so much to see in the cities that it is overwhelming and somewhat distracting from the Route 66 experience of driving through 'middle America'. So, we headed back to 11th Street this morning and drove all the way through Tulsa to Southwest Boulevard which had us heading off to Red Fork on Historic Route 66. On the way we managed to photograph the neon sign at the Rancho Grande. We drove south-westerly on the northern side of I-44 through Red Fork, Oakhurst and Bowden before crossing to the southern side of the interstate and into Supulpa where we took a photo of the Happy ... read more

Geo: 35.5261, -98.7072After another night of storms we woke to find that Saint Louis had been hit by a Tornado (lucky we were 3 hours west), it seems we have been outrunning them for quite a while now. We head back to the I40 and make our way to Tulsa. The weather starts to clear as we decide to do some more R66 and exit into Reno, here we drive quite a few miles on the historic route and pass the Fort Reno Gates. Back onto the I40, we exit again, drive some more historic road and pull up at Stroud where we were considering staying the night. Still to early in the day, we have lunch and head toward Oklahoma City and it is still raining. On taking another wrong exit we catch some traffic but ... read more
