AUGUST 17, 2018 (Friday) The 3:45 alarm clock tells me I had less than 4 hours of sleep. One hour later and we're off to the airport. Check-in went smoothly. I'm soon boarding another American Airlines plane for a flight to Dallas – Fort Worth, TX. At 6:00 the half filled plane is airborne. The passenger in front of my window seat is 3 or 4 years old. A few times, she reached back and touched my leg. I was rather surprised when she placed a Gold fish cracker on my leg... and then another. Ah, such innocence. Breakfast / snack is a cup of Cran-Apple juice and a pack of Biscoff. It is touted as “Europe's Favorite Cookie With Coffee”. After about 90 minutes, we land at DFW. A train takes a loop to the ... read more

On our way to this campground Nate stopped off at a few parts stores to see what the stock was for 16 spark plugs since the closest part store to the campground was 30 minutes. Of course, none of them in the area had 16 spark plugs in stock so we ordered them. Due to the distance from the campground, we decided it would be best to change them by the auto store just in case something went wrong. Surprise lol a spark plug broke off leaving the threads stuck in the engine block. Thankfully AutoZone had a loaner kit for removal but after looking at it and calling a friend from home that retired from Ford Nate found this loaner was for an older Ford engine and would not work on ours. There was also ... read more

Yesterday we spent the entire day visiting with Nates family in Ohio. I truly had a great time, if we lived in Ohio, I think I would have some new family/friends to pal around with. We also started having troubles with the truck the last 2 days, Nates check engine light has come on. Luckily Nates uncle had a code scanner to check the code, they cleared the codes but unfortunately the next day the engine light came back on. Nate believes from the code he will have to replace the spark plugs, which is usually a simple job, but his truck has 16. Not a hard job but time consuming so he has a long workday ahead of him tomorrow once the spark plugs come in. Our new location has no mobile data access making ... read more

Today was finally Daisy’s Day. We got an early start to move to Rippling Stream Campground, about a 3-hour drive near Columbus Ohio. We set up and headed out to Otherworld right away because they are closed tomorrow, and we are leaving the following day. Otherworld is an immersive art installation playground with over 40 rooms. Each room was unique, playful, with its own lighting effects, and sculptures. There were small passages to climb thru, secret areas, and plush seating to immerse yourself in the room. Daisy’s favorite room was the mirror passage because it gave the optical illusion of an infinity mirror where your image just appears to continue as far as you can see. It also had led lighting that gave off funhouse vibes with its sporadic patterns of colorful lighting. Nate enjoyed one ... read more

We did it! Yesterday after moving to our new campsite, Country Acres Campground & Fun Park (Passport America Campground) we stayed at the campground ALL DAY. Soon after arriving we took the doggies on a walk to explore the campground. Chloe enjoyed the dog park with all its fun ramps, tunnels, and space to run. While Mandy delighted in sniffing the entire dog park, hey she’s 14 so no obstacle courses for her. Nate and Daisy enjoyed all the inflatables: 1 slide, 2 obstacle courses, and 2 jumping pads. They enjoyed it so much Nate got kicked off the jumping pad. That did not hold them down they decided to play basketball for over an hour with all the kids from the campground. The campground also had a talent show that night, a pool, kiddie pool, ... read more

Well, this blog is usually for our travels, but today we enjoyed early morning birding with fellow Marriage Encounter couples. This is the easiest way to get the photos to you. The list below is what we saw, and maybe you did too! The fish dinner at Jolly Roger was marvelous, and the accommodations great - thank you Ron and Mary Jo. We were so glad Don & Carolyn and Rick could join us. Great place! We were VERY VERY lucky to get in the 3 hours that we did on the Boardwalk, with the rain looking so threatening. It's still thundering as I write this. For those who left right away, Fells, Grimes, Mohlmasters, & Rymans (with very knowledgeable Nicole!!) walked around the Visitor Center - and met up with Beth again. Sadly, the Center ... read more

When our daughter selected Ohio University for her graduate studies, I discovered that the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway was located near Athens. It's a preserved tourist railway line between Nelsonville and Logan offering frequent excursions with vintage equipment. Planning for our November visit to Athens, I noted the Hocking Valley would be running a steam locomotive powered special on Saturday, November 6. I had to ride it! The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway operates trackage that was once the Hocking Valley Railroad, connecting Columbus and Athens. The track now ends at Nelsonville. (The Columbus to Logan segment is operated for freight traffic by the regional Indiana & Ohio Railroad.) The steam excursion was to be led by HVSR 3, a Baldwin 0-6-0 built for the Ohio Power Company in 1920. It was a cold morning at the ... read more

Ohio is the state with the second highest number of covered bridges, with 140. Only Pennsylvania has more. On this visit to Athens, Susan and I wanted to seek out some of the covered bridges of Athens County. They are known locally, but not promoted here as heavily as covered bridges are in other localities. Covered bridges are picturesque, no matter how old or how large they are or how scenic their setting may be. They make the setting in which one finds them. And, so we set out after our first objective, the Kidwell Covered Bridge. So often covered bridges are in the middle of nowhere. That is true in Athens County. Our GPS took us north from Athens on secondary roads though farmland and woodland. But not past any villages or settlements. We reached ... read more

9/28/21 We didn’t have that much territory to cover today, so we did not leave the hotel until 8:55. But the real reason is that we are on the far west side of the eastern time zone and it is still dark at 7 AM. So we did not wake up until after 7:30. So, two excuses, you pick one. LOL When we left the hotel it was 67 degrees with a promise of warming into the 80’s. And it did. The plan was to drive east from Sandusky, OH to Cleveland along as much shorefront as possible. We took to Rt 6 with became 6 and 20. And we drove through many small towns along Lake Erie. The first was Vermillion. And what a cute town this was. Their little downtown area is lined with ... read more

9-27-21 First let me say, there was no blog entry yesterday. It was purely a moving day…500 miles across the interstate. There was really nothing to report except perhaps the new hotel that we stayed in last night. La Quinta in State Rd 933 in South Bend was brand new. So new, it was only the second day opened and we were the first people to stay in our room. Not to say that all was good. They still have some bugs to iron out, like say, putting a desk clerk on the job never having ever checked anyone in and then the owners leaving for the night and leaving her there alone. Not such a good idea. But we survived it all…at least I hope so, because we are still waiting for the $300 security ... read more
