We visited Ohio in April and posted pictures of the snow. We figured, going back over Labor Day...couldn't possibly have bad weather...right? Actually, the weather there was fine...a bit cooler than expected, but delightful. However, the Florida hurricane kept us checking on family and friends who were in the path and worried until we heard all had survived and were fine. This was our fourth trip up this year. As mentioned in a previous blog, Mom had a stroke in late December and after a brief hospital stay, was in a rehab/nursing facility right on the grounds of the retirement community where they lived in Chagrin Falls. Unfortunately, she did not respond well to the rehab and with increasing issues from dementia, it became obvious she would not be going back to the apartment to live; ... read more

My father is downsizing and moving to a smaller apartment, still in the retirement complex. We wanted to help so planned to get there early to help pack, move and get him settled in. We didn't get away until early afternoon on the first day and got just north of Knoxville where we found a Walmart and settled in for the night. A write-up in a review said it was "quiet" and "far from the road". Must have been a different spot; it was noisy, we had over a dozen 18-wheelers pull in for the night, and we had rain and heavy winds. Not restful. So next morning we got up in the dark and headed through the mountains in rain, fog, wind and taffic, mostly trucks. We arrived Thursday late afternoon, set up, then drove ... read more

WOW!! Mom was going to be celebrating her 90th birthday in November and Dad and the kids had been planning this for some time. Originally it was to be a big party with lots of people (like Dad's 90th last year, hosted and planned by Mom) but on reflection, Mom decided it was too much; too much noise, too much money, too much confusion. So we went with a smaller, family oriented celebration. The luncheon was at the Welshfield Inn in Burton and was Mom's choice. We had a private room and it was well catered. Mom knew family was coming, but not exactly who, so she was very pleased to see all three sons and spouses, Karen's husband Jay Wilkinson, most of her grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. In addition, I had contacted sister Karen's best ... read more

Time to get on the road and head our for John's 50th high school reunion. Yeah, I'm that old. This was a big deal and several people had worked really LONG (like over 2 years) to make it happen. We loaded up and headed out, but planned to take our time and enjoy the trip up from the south. First day we got as far as Richmond, KY and had a 2 night stop in Boonsborough State Park. Yes, the same Boonsborough as in the Daniel Boone TV series and legends. I had reservations and so when we pulled in, there were hosts at the gate ready to give us our maps, rules and markers and they would even guide us to the campsite, if needed. After getting the map, the girl said, "Oh, the sirens ... read more

After our anniversary celebration with Kim and Kris, we prepared to head out to Ohio to be with John's mother for Mother's Day. It would also be an opportunity to see how they had settled in to their new retirement center in Chagrin Falls. We saw them last year after the wedding when they had just moved in and there were boxes all around and they were trying to figure out how to stow things in a smaller environment. We left Martinsburg and drove west on interstates to Morgantown, over the mountains and through sometimes pounding rain. It was tiring but not scary. By the time we got to Ohio, the rain had stopped and we pulled in to the trailer park in Chesterland, OH we had stayed at last year and got set up. We ... read more

As mentioned before, the morning following the wedding, Kim and Kris met a lot of family and friends at the local Bob Evans for breakfast. It was nice for us as we had one more chance to chat in a less hectic environment than the wedding. We enjoyed breakfast, the company, and then said good bye as folks headed for the road. With the wedding over, and family and friends gone, the kids had a lot of follow-up/clean-up to do. Both worked hard at it and on Wednesday, left for a 4 day honeymoon in western West Virginia at a wonderful state park lodge. That gave us four days to torment our new granddaughter, Autumn, and make sure she was inculcated into the family properly by listening to lousy jokes, Trish and I saying the same ... read more
