We decided to take it easy this morning and leisurely got ready for the day. We skipped breakfast at the hotel and instead decided to have an earlier lunch. This turned out to be a good thing, because Café Pasquals is quite popular and our wait time was an hour. We used this time to do some shopping. Went to a great chile store next door and bought three different types of red chile. Then we walked around looking for pottery, no luck yet. When our table was ready, we got a text and we headed to the restaurant. The wait now was an hour and a half, when we left it was up to 2 hours. It was well worth the wait. The place is very small and there was no personal space, almost sitting ... read more

Today was a busy day, quick breakfast in the hotel then off to our Cooking Class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking. There is also a great shop which has everything you need for New Mexican cooking. Normally, we prefer to take a hands-on class, but there were just not much in the way of hands-on offerings that also included eating what you cooked. So, we took a Demo class entitled “Traditional New Mexican I.” The chef had a great deal of experience including formal French training. Chef Mary Don Wright, did a great job of explaining everything form the types of peppers to the actual process of making your red or green chile. It was the best demo class we have taken, since taking one from our Friend Tina Brusha at the Portland Whole ... read more

Every trip we hit that point were sleep becomes more important than breakfast. Today was that day. Just needed the extra 45 minutes of lying-in bed with Tarragon. It also turned out to be a good thing once we got closer to lunch. We started our date at the Georgia O’Keefe Museum. We had allotted 2 hours for this, but really only needed one. It was smaller than we anticipated. We were however very fortunate to be planers because it was timed entry and you needed to book in advance, which we of course did. The line of walk ins was quite long and only about 20 of them managed to gain entrance, the museum was sold out for the rest of the day. The museum was very interesting basically spanned here entire career from New ... read more

Each day we seem to be sleeping in a bit longer. Tarragon will not allow us to sleep in much beyond 7 because he has a very strict feeding schedule. He typically jumps up on the bed the first sign of movement, which can be as early as 5:30, he doesn’t start be insistent until about 7. We both did the continental breakfast this morning, yogurt, pastry, coffee fruit. Then it was off to our first museum. The New Mexico Museum of History is done in three parts. The first part is the history up to the time it became a state. The second part is from 1912 to the present and the final part is the palace of the governors. The palace is the where the both the Spanish and US Territorial governors lived. It ... read more

Slept in even a bit more than yesterday, breakfast at 9:30 at the hotel then off for a day in the Mountains. We covered a lot of ground today, 175 miles in the car, and 3 miles on foot. The Jémez Mountain Trail. The Jémez mountain trail is just northwest of Santa Fe. It is a circular route that takes you through the Bandelier National Monument, Caldera National Preserve, the Jémez National Forest and Jémez Indian Reservation. It was a very diverse drive with dramatic changes in both landscape and weather. The day started with clear skies and as we rose higher in elevation turned to snow. The first stop was White Rock Overlook. This offered a dramatic view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Rio Grande River. From there it was on to ... read more

Slept in today, Tarragon was very happy to be in the bed between us for a bit longer this morning. While we are in Santa Fe, we will be having breakfast at the hotel every day, mainly to take advantage of our food credit with comes with the gold level of Hilton Honors. As we walked to the restaurant the fireplace in the lobby was a blaze, with real pinon wood. The smell was delightful. Jerry has been talking about the smell of a pinon wood fire for weeks before this trip and now I understand why. There are three choices for breakfast, the standard buffet, eggs, bacon, etc., only difference is that the condiments are salsa and jalapeños, a breakfast burrito or a continental buffet. I had the burrito, which was really good, green chilis ... read more

We all enjoyed a little extra sleep this morning, even Tarragon waited until 6:30 to jump on the bed for attention. Snoozed until 7 then got up did some pre-packing and showering. Had breakfast in Mas Tapas y Vino because it was just convenient since we needed to check out by 11. Breakfast put the restaurant back on track for me. Much better than last night and equally as good as the first night. Jerry had breakfast tacos, scrambled eggs, bacon, Manchego and cheddar cheese on a crips corn tortilla, there were three in all, served with green chili sauce and patatas bravas. I had the New Mexico Breakfast bowl; it was quite large. Patatas Bravas with house made sausage, which was very tasty, Cheddar-Jack Cheese two eggs over easy and green chili sauce. Both were ... read more

Today started by meeting Jerry’s aunt, uncle and cousin at The Frontier for breakfast. It is directly across from the University of New Mexico campus. It is very popular and has 5 separate dining rooms. You order at the counter and then wait for your number to be displayed on the board. The line was not bad when we got there, but it can be out the door at times. Two things of note are: 1) the tortilla making machine. Someone is constantly standing at the machine putting the dough on the conveyor belt and at the other end a fresh made tortilla pops out; 2) they are known for their cinnamon rolls (so of course we ordered one.) TJ, Karen and Gina had already ordered and eaten, since they got there 30 minutes earlier than ... read more

Breakfast, family time, Anniversary dinner. That was the day. Other than the interruption from work that stressed me out for most of the day, we had a good day. We slept in a little then had breakfast at Cecilia’s famous for their red chili sauce. We walked to breakfast in the brisk morning air, actually wore my new winter coat as it was 27 degrees. We were the only customers in the place until the very end of our breakfast. They did a huge take out/delivery business. The place is not fancy but the food is solid and very traditional New Mexican. We both had Huevos Rancheros the only difference was mine was with carne adovada and Jerry’s with shredded beef, onions and tomatoes. They were the best I have every had and the red chili ... read more

Today was a travel day so this will be a fairly short entry. Slept in until in until about 6:30 and took our time packing and getting ready to leave. Went downstairs to the breakfast room, nothing to report there. We were on the road by 10:30. The route was 285 through Roswell until in intersected with I-40 then right to Albuquerque. We stopped for lunch in Roswell, yes that Roswell home of the UFO festival and aliens. The only alien we saw was one with a poncho outside of a Mexican Restaurant. We had lunch at Martin’s Capitol Café. The best meal since Cloudcroft. After two days of just barely tolerable food it was finally nice to have actual decent Mexican (not New Mexican). It was a busy place and was a pretty quick lunch. ... read more
