Mon, 20 January, 2014 We decided against going into Mexico and drove north instead after stopping a few minutes at the visitor center. They had memorabilia of the town’s claim to fame, Pancho Villa’s incursion into the US at Columbus, NM. We drove on to Deming, where we did a little shopping. Then, after calling Rockhound SP again, and finding they were still full, we drove on to City of Rocks State Park near Faywood, NM. It’s a beautiful little park that is pretty much a pile of boulders in the middle of the desert. Apparently it’s the result of a volcanic explosion some 35 million years ago, and we were told, the boulders are ash, not volcanic rock. Final days at Elephant Butte.... Really enjoyed this place, great views, awesome spot for Kona. We stayed 4 nights mid week and into Saturday. Mid week was the time to be there, very few people around. As Friday crept along and into Saturday park traffic picked up and the RV's started rolling in. This is their off season, there was probably 15 groups we could see by the time we left, still to many for us... Park brochure said for Memorial Day weekend the park (...over a 40 mile lake) swells to 100,000 visitors...yikes here are some photo's of our final days at the Butte JP... read more

What to do today?!


As Shannon said, we got pushed a little further south due to chilly mornings and impending cold rain and possibly snow. Turned out for the best. We searched the map for lakes in New Mexico so the dog can cool down, there's not many lakes and many seem to be man made via dammed rivers. We made our way West from Tucumcari to Albuquerque then picked up Interstate-25 South to the City of Elephant Butte (just to our south and we did visit for shopping reasons is the City of Truth or Consequences.....im on my best behavior telling nothing but the truth....) Anywho, we're in Elephant Butte State Park, initial thought was to spend a day possibly a night here and carry on. Once we pulled in we paid for a $10 camping spot on a ... read more
