blog 03-07-20 Cabalgata Biacional Fiesta de Amistad I planned to get up early so I'd be able to get to Columbus, NM in time for the parade. Columbus is 30 miles south of Deming and less then 2 miles from Mexico. I had been to Poncho Villa State Park last week to visit Lynne and posted information about the raid that took place there in the early 1900s, the only time the US was invaded in it's history. General Pershing was commander and after the attack he raided Mexico in search of Poncho but was unable to find him. The celebration today was to commemorate the raid and express camaraderie between the US and Mexico. There must have been 75 or more riders in the parade who started in Mexico and rode into Columbus with a ... read more

THE PUNITIVE EXPEDITION During the early morning hours of March 9, 1916 Pancho Villa launched a surprise attack on the peacefully snoring community of Columbus, NM. Pancho was all mad because the Wilson Administration recognized Venusiano Carranza as the rightful leader of Mexico and imposed an embargo on guns and ammo sold to Pancho. There was a fellow living at the Commercial Hotel in Columbus who had been supplying Pancho with guns and ammo, but because of the embargo could no longer deliver them. He still owed Pancho money for the failed shipment. Pancho wanted a pound of flesh from that guy, and he wanted to rob the custom house, and the bank, and maybe capture a few cavalry horses too. The Commercial Hotel was the first establishment that Pancho’s men visited and the gun dealer ... read more

We made it to Mexico! Last Wednesday, after 2400 miles and 123,000 vertical feet of total ascent, Fi and I finally crossed the border from Columbus, NM into Palomas, Mexico. Within 5 minutes of rolling into town, we pulled up to a storefront that sells souvenirs and also serves as a bar and restaurant, where a woman working there saw us coming and immediately thrust a beer and margarita into our hands. "You made it from Canada!" she exclaimed. "You deserve a drink, first ones are free!" We didn't have the heart to tell her that we had started out a little south of the US-Canada border, lest we jeopardize our newly awarded free drinks. Our path to Mexico led us south from Silver City, through the sleepy desert town of Hachita, NM, where we met ... read more

Sunday, 19 January, 2014 Last night we did go up to the McDonald Observatory for the Star Party, held Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights. We didn’t know quite what to expect or even if they’d be sold out, but we went anyway. It was AMAZING!! We sat outside (it was cold) at their outdoor arena while one of the staff gave us a talk on the night sky above us. He pointed out constellations with a laser pointer and told stories about them, as well as pointing out stars and satellites passing overhead. We saw the Hubble telescope pass by and numerous other satellites. It was just after dusk when the program got started, but as the sky got darker, the stars became more and more crowded in the sky. The Milky Way was the densest ... read more
