He's A Pro Now !!
Tim unhooking all the "stuff" at the KOA in Holbrook, Arizona ! It was really dark outside when we woke up this morning in Holbrook and that could only mean one thing in Arizona, RAIN, RAIN and more RAIN !! We forced ourselves to get up even though we wanted to lay in bed all morning and listen to the rain beating down on the roof. By the time Tim finished unhooking everything on the RV, the rain had slowed a little, so we decided to stay at the KOA and enjoy some of their all-you-can-eat pancakes. It's kinda neat, because most all of the KOA's we've stayed at on this trip have these pancake breakfasts right there on site. You can get pancakes, sausage, coffee or juice, all for just $1.99 and it's all-you-can-eat. Of course, the pancakes are so huge you can only eat half of the first plate and then you're done! As the morning lingered on, it continued to rain, the sky was dark and it was kinda cool outside. We finished breakfast and then headed out on Old Route 66 to make our way to Silver City, New Mexico. On the ride over, I realized that we had weaved in and out of three states yesterday and crossed
Wake Up ! Wake Up !
This is me trying not to let the long drive put me to sleep !! into two different time zones. Tim and I were just talking the other day about how we never know what day of the week it is much less what time zone we're in !! We have to constantly look at the cell phones and try to figure out if we're one, two or three hours behind or ahead of the time at home. But hey, we're not complaining, we think this is a great problem to have !! Route 66 led us to Highway 180 where we traveled for four and a half hours until we made it to Silver City. Although I did doze off for a little while, I'm pretty sure that it rained the entire trip that took us through Gila National Forest and the San Francisco Mountains. We walked around Silver City for a little while and we even found Billy The Kid's original home-place. Before leaving town we decided we had better get dinner because it was going to be another long stretch before we would make it to the White Sands National Monument. We opted for a local Mexican restaurant where the food was good but still no cheese dip !! Evidently we southerners
Lovely Scenery on The 4 Hour Drive !
Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Again Another Day !! made up the whole "cheese dip" theory and it's definitely not authentic Mexican cuisine. When we asked for a bowl of it the waitress just laughed at us and said "We get that all the time from people in the South !" We finished up an early dinner and dropped by the Pilot Gas Station to fill up where we paid $3.89 for regular unleaded. This was the absolute cheapest gas of the trip and we were really excited, but it was time to get back on the road. The rain had finally stopped for a while and somewhere between Silver City and Holloman, New Mexico, we came upon a big beautiful rainbow in the sky. It was really big and you could vividly see every color perfectly. A few hours later we arrived in Holloman, New Mexico at the White Sands National Monument but not before crossing over the Rio Grande River. We pulled in White Sands about an hour before the sun was setting and it was perfect timing. As most of you, we had never heard of this White Sands National Monument, but we saw it on the map and it was in Lynn's book so we
Beautiful Rainbow After The Storm !
Wonder if there's a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow ??? thought we would stop. I am so glad that we took the time to stop because it turned out to be one of the most beautiful sights we have seen on this trip. This place consist of 275 square miles of glistening snow white sand dunes that make up the largest gypsum dune field in the world !! It is so incredibly breathtaking and gorgeous. Tim parked the motor home and he headed straight for the tallest hill he could find. We chased each other around and played in the white sand as if it were snow. Tim figured out how to set the timer on the camera so he dug a small divot in the sand and put the camera in it so we could photograph ourselves. We had so much FUN !! We just goofed around and played like little kids all the while the sun was setting above us. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. The pink and blue colors just glistened across the white sand as we stood by and watched the sun disappear. The White Sands National Monument has to be one of the best kept secrets in America and
San Francisco Mountains in New Mexico !
Tim had to drive through a lot of rain and fog to get us to Silver City ! you absolutely have to seen this place if you are ever in the area !!! We headed out of White Sands and decided not to make the journey all the way to Roswell tonight, so we settled in at the nearby town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Tim spent some time outside honing in on his UFO skills, but he never saw anything unusual in the sky, so he came back in and we called it a night !! The little aliens would just have to wait until tomorrow !!
