We don't make it back to New Mexico quite as often as we want to, but we do go at least once a year. We mostly go back to see family and friends so accomplishing things is not very high on the priority list. Kind-of makes you realize that you also need to see and do the things close to you in your area while you live there, because you just never know when you are gonna be out of there. One of the things we did manage to accomplish while on one of our visits was the GEORGIA O'KEEFFE TRAIL. A well-known painter who lived out her live in New Mexico (well she lived her for a good chunk of her life). We've already blogged about her previously since she has an entire museum dedicated ... read more

Geo: 36.2072, -106.318In anticipation of our trip out west to Lake Powell we have been trying to get our arms prepared by doing some paddling close to home. We decided to head out to Abiquiu Reservoir which is about an hour north of Santa Fe.The drive there is beautiful as you head out into the red rock country. You pass through several Indian pueblos along the way and you cross the Rio Grande and follow along the Chama to get to Abiquiu. Wonderful ride!Decided we wanted to launch from the boat ramp to make it easier to get in and out. We had gone to yoga class that morning so we did not get out onto Abiquiu until around 2:00pm. Nonetheless it was a glorious day. The sun was shining and we had the ravens calling ... read more

September 24, 2014 On our last day we chose another option for breakfast. Fina’sis a popular breakfast/lunch place among locals. Very unassuming exterior, it almost looked like a trailer outside with a high sign. Fina’s is located across the street from the High Country Restaurant and Saloon. The inside was surprisingly spacious and clean. Photos lined the walls thanking Fina, the owner, for her various community contributions. Several photos of annual Sheriff Possie Drives added to the local color. Fina must have a thing for Coca Cola for all throughout the restaurant we saw Coke memorabilia. We were surprised to find that Fina was a proud fan of the Pittsburg Steelers! The food was just average, what you would expect from a regular breakfast place. I really don’t understand the comments saying there was tons of ... read more

Geo: 36.2072, -106.318Camping and Kayaking Stunning Lake AbiquiuWe are trying to get in shape for our trip out to California later this month and so decided to go to Abiquiu and do some paddling. We got all packed up and set off. When we got to the campground, the wonderful volunteer that checked us in was very helpful. She picked out a site in hopes we could get level and would like it.We drove to the site and got level and loved the view we were given from the site! We looked out over the lake and had a fabulous view of the mountains in all directions. The sky was overcast and so the clouds were making interesting contrasts on the mountains and lake.Had a nice dinner and called it an early evening. After the sun ... read more

As usual, Cem and I scrambled around in the morning and were late getting on the road. We are still too used to working and sleeping late. Our current morning routine mostly involves figuring out how to situate the contraption on our roof so the straps don't make a noisy racket while we are driving. Though it does sort offsets the awful noise our car is still making. Thus settled, We beat a hasty exit from Santa Rosa on our way to Santa Fe. Once there, I decided we had driven enough and needed a break so we checked into the Silver Saddle early - a kitchy low -budget little adobe motel on the outskirts of town. I comforted myself with the knowledge that it was recomended by the Lonely Planet. My whole reason for coming ... read more
