Day 15. Bozeman to Ennis Today we stayed in Bozeman, named after John Bozeman who created the Bozeman Trail to the Gold Fields through Indian territory in the 1860's. Most of the day was spent in the Museum of the Rockies containing fossils of dinosaurs found in this region, many in the last 25 years. What interested me the most was a transport section with old vehicles and carts, buildings etc. There was also a 140 acre farm complete with farmhouse and buildings dating from the 1860's. The hour was made of squared off beams on top of each other and lime between to stop draughts and boarded up on the inside. It had a very ornate kitchen range and held many gadgets of the day such as wash boards, sewing machines and hand looms. There ... read more

Day 13 Livingston to Bozeman Rain overnight and a dull start to the day. By the time we had breakfast at Clarks it was spitting and not too troublesome as we followed the tracks to the railway station for a look. A bite to eat for lunch was found at an adjacent deli and off we went up a steady gradient to the Grizzly Bear Experience, where abandoned bears are cared for and allowed to roam on the compound. €6 for old age pensioners, that's me. As we came along the road we saw a cyclist on the adjacent Freeway ( read motorway) loaded down with four panniers , saddle bags and a big flag. What? Along the valley we saw several old vehicles, farm machinery and tractors abandoned, so my progress was hindered somewhat in ... read more

A few days ago, I was running errands with my mom, when we bumped into one of my high school teachers. I told her I was about to leave for graduate school in Applied Theatre. She said, “Oh…really? That’s not what I would have chosen for you. What made you interested in that?” I briefly told her that theatre had always been important to me, but that I wanted to work with non-professionals; that I am interested in teaching, but not necessarily in a school; and so on. But what I wanted to say was, “What wouldyou have expected me to do?” As I sit here about to fly off to another country, I can’t imagine much else for which I’d be willing to leave the family and place I love so much for ... read more

I feel that I have to start off by saying: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!! Seriously! Bears look cute and fuzzy and have those padded little (gigantic) feet! They look cuddly - and we have those Teddy Bears (remember, as discussed in my blog about Mt. Rushmore December 11, 2012 - they are named after Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt). You might think it's crazy (because it IS!) but there has been history of people getting out of the car to stand beside bears on the side of the road for a picture. TERRIBLE IDEA! DO NOT DO THAT!!! When we were in Yellowstone last time, there was a grizzly running along the road, and a bunch of tourists outside of their cars, setting up tri-pods, to get pictures! (The ambulance was parked, running, with its lights ... read more

The first time I went to Lewis & Clark Caverns was 1983. (Google map http://goo.gl/maps/e10cz). Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know. This ages me.... but I was a kid...does that count? The next time I went was 2010, with Peter. And then, we went again this year. ...considering that, apparently, stalactites grow between 1/4" and 1" every century, and stalagmites pretty much get the "left over" drippings from the stalactities, not much has changed from 1983 to 2012, and certainly not between 2010 and 2012. (See more information regarding stalgmites, stalactites and other cave formations, in my previous blog, December 16, 2012, regarding "Black Hills Miscellany".) Still, we'll probably go again, before the next century comes around. Besides, the tour guides mix things up a bit, and have different jokes, and of course, there's the other ... read more

Hi all -- I've made an executive decision: This blog site is being replaced with an email group. I'll be able (with Mary's tutoring) to attach pictures as I want them edited. The map - with which I was not satisfied in any event - will likely go. For those of you who want your comments broadcast to the whole group, please feel free to hit "reply to all." I believe that this replacement with an email group constitutes flailing, as I anticipated initially. If you don't get a test email from me shortly (and if you want to receive these messages), please email me (at rdl.lambert@gmail.com) to confirm that your address is part of the group. A better Travels with Big Blue is about to arise from the ashes. Roy... read more

Photos from this day at Yellowstonw National Park Well, we started this YYNP trip with little or no expectations of everything going smoothly so we'd be ready to enjoy whatever happens. We arrived in Bozeman, Montana, anticipating a prolonged stay at the airline's customer service counter. Again we were not disappointed. Because of air-travel snafu we learned on our connecting flight in Denver that the airline screwed up our connections both coming and going. The only way they could correct the problem and still get us on the plane was to register us with special stow-away privileges or something. They told us the Yosemite leg of our trip was still messed up in their system so we should stop at customer service when we landed in Bozeman to get it corrected. Delta blamed US Airways and ... read more

From St. Louis we ended up in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois, where there was a little bit of sunshine in sight and luckily our GPS took us straight to our hosts for the next two nights. Chicago is pretty large in size, and traffic that is to definitely be avoided...bad drivers everywhere. There didn't seem too much to do in Chicago though, ironically enough, there were a few museums, theater, the great lake and finally the most delicious restaurants! We'd probably rate it the best city to eat in so far, full of options for every taste. We went to the Chicago Diner, and they had the best burgers ever and the greatest milkshakes in the world- the cookies and cream is a must! Our CS hosts were Danelle and Judy, and they made ... read more
