We’re off on an adventure to the Great Smoky Mountains! The bulk of our trip will be in Tennessee with Andrew’s family, and we’re hoping to catch the synchronous fireflies at Elkmont, our campground. Last night, we drove for about four hours and stopped in Hannibal, Missouri, to stay overnight. This was Mark Twain’s hometown and is the inspiration of his popular adventure stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Andrew’s paternal grandmother is originally from this part of the country. Her family is from Louisiana, Missouri, so Andrew’s been here a few times when he was a child. We were hoping to see the Mark Twain cave this morning before heading back out on the road. Unfortunately, there is incredible, terrible flooding in the area. As we drove through Missouri, we saw entire fields under ... read more

Our big trip is only a week away. This is a new blog site, because my old one went away. Hopefully this works. You probably received an email notifying you of this post. Sort of a test. If you don't want to read, just ignore the emails or let me know to take you off the list. Our trip: Dot and I leave next Monday afternoon. We fly to Chicago, then to London. We are going to spend a few days in London, mainly going to the theatre. We have tickets to 2 shows. Then we will take the train from London to Scotland for the main portion of our trip. We will start with a few days in Edinburgh, then rent a car and head for the Scottish Highlands. (We have been watching the Outlander ... read more

We arrived around 3 PM, checked into our hotel and headed to pick up Emily and her friend Lauren. Unfortunately, Ben started feeling sick last night. We hoped it would pass by morning. He wasn’t great all day. He still wanted to try to come with us to see Emily. I could tell he was just going through the motions. Emily greeted us outside her Delta Delta Delta house and took us in for a tour. Fun to see where she lives. We ... read more

Back in 1994 we took our 1st ocean cruise. Fast forward to today and it is almost time for us to take our 21stcruise. On some of our previous cruises we have done some really unusual things (like riding an overgrown wicker basket down the streets of Funchal Madera, or walking on the Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rockies, or transiting through the locks of the Panama Canal), and have seen some remarkable things (like the 12 Apostles jutting up from the sea along the Great Ocean Road in southern Australia, or seeing the 70 meter hand-stitched Bayeux Tapestry), and have visited some incredible locations (like the palaces of St Petersburg, the Cathedrals of Rome, or rounding Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America). Yes there have been some real special highlights during many ... read more

We need a vacation. The following things have happened to us in the last 30 days: · I hit a large fencing nail on the highway and blew-out a tire on my SUV · The coil on a garage door just randomly decided to break, shoot off and swing around and cause some other minor damage in our garage and to my SUV. · I accidentally knocked-over and destroyed hubby’s 65 inch, UHD, 4K TV (which was replaced within 24 hours, for the record) · The TV slammed my thumb on the way down which caused some major damage to the nerves in my left thumb to the point that I can’t even carry a purse with that hand or grip anything tight · I almost ran over some dear co-workers and crashed into some cars ... read more

There have been some problems with the original BLOG we created for this trip. For some reason it was determined to be SPAM and was disabled. So we have returned to using this blog (from our January Caribbean Cruise) to tell our friends about this vacation. You can read or ignore the previous posts according to your interests. New information will be documented in future posts – probably beginning about Sept 8 or 9. Thanks for understanding and continuing to follow our antics. ... read more

We continued our drive east today from Greensburg, Kansas to Springfield, Missouri. We were surprised by the rolling hills and red sandstone mesas in the Gypsum Hills area of southern Kansas along our scenic drive. After a picnic lunch in Island Park in Winfield, Kansas, we drove out to the Little House on the Prairie Museum near Independence, Kansas. This is the site of the Ingalls family's first prairie home and has a replica of the one-room cabin they lived in from 1869-1871. We continued on to our hotel in Springfield, Missouri.... read more

We weren’t sure what we would want to do today, but we decided that even though the campground we were in is very nice and our site is a good one, the negative is that the power is weak as is the wifi. Since it was forecast to be fairly hot today we were worried that we might have trouble with our AC...NOT a good thing when the weather is hot and humid for sure! Therefore, we pulled out of camp at 10:00 heading north towards St. Joseph, MO. Driving out through Branson, we were amazed at the growth of the town and the huge improvements to the road system there. Our drive today consisted of lovely views of wooded hills which perch upon high rock faces. Our trek took us onto plateaus that had green ... read more

We had a last visit and hugs with the kids. As we finished getting ready to get on the road they drove out to take one more hike before heading back in the direction of home. Shortly after they left, we pulled out of camp (a little after 10:00) going towards Branson, MO. Apparently we had fried our shore electric cord the other day when we blew a breaker while trying to run too many high power things at one—a word to the wise—that is NOT a good idea!! Luckily we had purchased a new one several years ago, so we are good to go. On our way out, we stopped once again at Petit Jean’s Gravesite and overlook so we could take in that magnificent view once again. From there, we headed northward up and ... read more
