Day 9 – July 5th Today started out slowly as we slept in from our 4th of July adventures. Mom made a heaping pile of bacon and eggs. Annie’s family joined us for breakfast. We all shared stories, played farm with Lucy, and ate! Don and I set out to the post office for stamps. Our quick trip ended in screams! As I pulled out of the parking space, a woman backed up into the side of THE NEW VAN……AHHHHHHHHH!!! Ok, so it turns out it wasn’t that bad, but my blood was pumping for a while. There is a tiny scratch that can be buffed out, but the van only had 3,000 miles on it! After calming down we headed to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. They had a nice traveling exhibit from ... read more

Day 8 - Happy 4th of July! We woke up to an unprecedented cool morning in St. Louis. Mom had homemade muffins and fresh fruit ready for us out on the deck. After soaking in the fresh air and sunshine, mom and I spent some time catching up and chatting as Don had some quite time to enjoy another cup of coffee and blog writing time (which always seems to come at a premium on these trips). As noon came and went, we voted for lunch, my voice shouted the loudest and so it was off to Steak & Shake. For those of you not familiar with Steak & Shake, they serve steak burgers, skinny fries, chili, and about 50 types of milkshakes. I had a hot fudge brownie shake and mom indulged in ... read more

Day 7 – July 3rd Memphis to St. Louis Today we visit the metropolis of Memphis. First stop, the famous Peabody Hotel. We have a deadline, we have to be there by 11:00, if we don’t get there by then we miss the big event. “What event”, you ask? Of course, it’s the marching of the ducks! Ever since the 1930’s the hotel’s Duckmaster (yes, there really is such a position) marches the wild Mallard ducks from their penthouse pen down the elevator to the lobby where they march, in a line, up a ramp and into the marble fountain. There they will spend the day, quietly paddling around, pleasing visitors, until 4:00 when they reverse the march to the elevator and back up to the roof. After three months of this strenuous duty ... read more

We arrived in St. Louis late, as we hoped - hoping it to be cool enough to set up camp. It wasn't. We didn't even unhook the trailer! We just plugged in the power so we could have air conditioning for the night! (There were, tragically, reports of heat related deaths, from power failures or air conditioning malfunctions... :( very scary. I've heard of that before, but never been so near. Poor people. We decided if the power went out during the night, we'd have to just get in the truck and keep driving.) We planned to get up early the next morning and go up the St. Louis Arch. (http://www.stlouisarch.com) I've heard that it's best to go to the Arch early, anyway, before the school kids get there (the sight seeing windows are still relatively ... read more

Trying to find my way from the Greyhound bus terminal to my hostel I was befriended by a guy returning from tour in Afghanistan, who proudly informed my that St Louis is now the #1 crime capital in the US (beating New Orleans at #2). Hmmm .. Finally found thehostel which was more like a run-down, rickety boarding house. No-one there to book me in (how surprising), so not a good sign of the reliability of this place. Someone finally turned up and showed me my bed. The girls' dorm was completely empty except for me which felt a bit creepy in this old place. A young guy who said he did maintenance work there offered to show me around the nearby pubs/live music venues in the Soulard district where the hostel was located. Around this ... read more

We woke up at 8.30am to try and catch the motel breakfast, which unsurprisingly was not very good. We left the motel to visit St Louis for the day. Our first stop was to visit the famous "Gateway to the West" or "St Louis Archway." On the way there, we passed through the city centre with all the christmas lights - it was like a nice comfortable city. The atmosphere was warming and welcoming. We stopped off in a supermarket and bought some breakfast. I got myself a freshly baked bagel and freshly baked blueberry muffin. I was surprised at how much more friendly the staff were in comparison with most places in California. There was also a bottle of lemonade called "Leninade" - join the socialist movement - I thought it was kinda funny. We ... read more

We left at around 10 in the morning and headed towards Oklahoma City downtown. We could hardly see anything as the entire city seemed to be under construction. We visited the Oklahoma City bombing memorial, which had two walls separated by water. After driving for several 100 miles we reached a point that was at the trisection of three states - Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. It seemed like the 3 state marker was ignored by all three states. It certainly didn't look like a tourist attraction, and was in a corner on a muddy side street. We were happy to see such a place, however. We took videos at all 3 state lines, and hope to make a longer video from all the snippets. It was dark by the time we reached St. Louis. It looked ... read more

On my road trip from Colorado home to Orland Park, my last leg of the trip was staying a couple days with Brett and Megan (and Jax, of course) in O'Fallon. Brett and Megan took me around to some of St. Louis' fun tourist attractions. We went on a brewery tour at Anheuser Busch, which is always fun. We also went to City Museum, which is definitely not your normal "museum!" It's interactive, part museum, part playground and fully odd! The building was once a shoe factory, and in homage, now makes and sells colorful shoelaces in one exhibit. There are vault door from an old bank. An underground 'cave.' There's a slide from the top floor to the bottom. On the roof, there's a small ferris wheel, and a large slide. All in all, it's ... read more
