Its not really just the house thats a little creepy in Vicksburg. The whole town seems a little anxious. A poor desperate anxious. And there are a lot of poorer areas of the south don't get me wrong, but they seem to have a gracious poorness about them. Nothing sinister or dangerous. Just not very weathly, is all. Not here, and I'm not sure if the lady at the B&B put me in this mindframe or the town really is sending me the heebie-jeebies, but I definitely feel the inclination to look over my shoulder, like I'm in a dark alley. Like something is about to go bad wrong. And this is despite the historical buildings, pretty streets, bright sunshine and river views. It felt like getting off the subway in certain parts of Harlem, and ... read more

I arrive in Vicksburg, perched high above the Mississippi river, about 2 hours to sunset, and make my way through the main street and down a steep enbankment towards the river to the bed and breakfast I’m stay at tonight. The parlor, I can see into on the right from the front door is even bigger . ... read more

After a fairly lengthy drive, we arrived in Jackson, and made our first stop at the Old Capitol. Normally there's a museum there, and it looked like it could be pretty interesting. When we visited though, the Old Capitol was closed for massive renovations. The Old Capitol was fairly small, with a small dome atop it, but probably would have been worth the stop. Next door, we found a Mississippi War Memorial in an American Legion building. The memorial was nicely done, and ... read more

This morning, Alan and I wake up to the smells of egg casserole combined with fresh coffee. After listening to Doug Cousineau’s stories about his 1870-era home, we expected to see Leona Baer’s ghost floating around our room last night in Baer House Inn Bed and Breakfast . Thankfully, our sleep was a peaceful one. With only one day to explore Vicksburg, we have lots of history to cram into the day. Since yesterday was spent sitting in a car, Alan and I opt for exercise and a tour of Vicksburg on foot. It means we won’t have an opportunity to visit the National Military Park commemorating the siege and defense of Vicksburg, a key battle of the Civil War. Instead, we’ll save that for our next visit. As we walk through Vicksburg, Alan and I ... read more
