At 5:30 in the morning the sky is grey. At 5:30 in the morning the coffee shops are closed. The humidity was high. Mosquitoes rouse hungry, attracted to any animal that exudes CO2 . Today it drizzled making the grey just another tone darker. The mosquitoes don’t care about the rain. But it was breezy. So what better place to be than to a nature center in Rockport, Maine? Well I can think of a few . . . .thousand. For those who reaaaaaaaalllllllllly have an interest, here’s more info; http://www.merryspring.org. We all gathered to take pictures of the flowers. Whoopi! Too much rain though. The flowers drooped. I walked around trying to find some pictures to take. The rest of the class was very excited. With tripods and macro zoom lenses they took really close ... read more

Very interesting first day. Fran first. Last night, before the first class, Fran was having real doubts. Talking about what she thought was going to happen in her class she was frustrated. Pabulum is the word she used to describe what she thought she’d be facing. I counseled her in my most gentle, loving way, “dear, be patient, give it a chance, be open to new ideas.” “I will be,” she said with love and affection in her big brown eyes. But underneath it all, I thought her ADHD would doom her. The class was toast. She started at 8:15 this morning. By 12 she was in LOVE with the teacher, in LOVE with the class. She was challenged but the teacher got Fran and Fran got the teacher. The teacher’s name is Cig Harvey. You ... read more

July 5, 2009 Have you ever been in a room with a group of people with whom you felt, at least on the surface, that you had nothing in common? This group of like-minded or like-feeling individuals didn’t know one another before but they didn’t have to. It appears that they get it and I don’t. They are Photographers and I take snapshots. At least this is how I felt tonight listening to the introduction to the workshops at the Maine Media Workshop where I’ve enrolled in “Photographing the Colors of the Maine Landscape.” There are 15 workshops starting tonight ranging from digital still photography to video, lighting, and film. And all the students, one-hundred plus of them, except for me are, according to the Charles Altshultz, the Executive Director, creative and ready to delve deep ... read more

Tuesday 22nd January - Sunday 27th January 2008 This is more of a photo session as I have just eaten a steakbomb sub, which has a week’s worth of MEAT in it and am feeling a little lethargic and thus cannot be bothered to summarize what has happened in too much detail. I apologize for my laziness and the very dull approach to my last few blogs, but you know how I feel about winter and creative motivation. On Tuesday I made a big Bangers and Mash dinner for Laura and we drank a bottle of champagne for absolutely no reason. I am not a fan and it changed my mood significantly putting a bit of a dampener on an otherwise great evening, taking my mind off the insulating work that would take up the entire ... read more

We’ve been in Maine for a month now, and the more we see, the more we realize how much more there is to see. However the mornings are getting colder, there’s more north and stronger wind, so it’s time to start south. It gets dark now at 8:00pm The first week we were here our friends Mary and Christian took us on a general circuit around Penobscot Bay. Since then we’ve been to some incredible spots, and found a couple places we just keep going back to because they are so beautiful. There are several things that make Maine unique from anywhere else we’ve cruised. First the boats. On our last night here, I’m sitting in the cockpit of our boat in Rockland harbour. Looking out at the boats there are small traditional sailboats, Lobster boats, ... read more

We’re currently doing an overnight passage from Point Anne Mass. to Penobscot Bay Maine, where we plan on cruising for the next month or so. We left 3 weeks ago today from Oakville, and when we reach Penobscot Bay we will have traveled 820 nautical miles. That’s slow going compared to a car, even though a nautical mile is longer than a regular mile. At the end of the last blog we had just anchored in Newport Rhode Island, and gone in to check out the town. Newport is one of the famous boating places, and it’s easy to see why. While for sure it’s a tourist town it has so many sail and power boats, that you could spend days going around the anchorage checking out all the cool boats. There are big new ... read more

LOCATION: Camden to Acadia Camden Hills SP was a lovely area and we hoped to hike and bike, but the rain got in the way. We walked through Camden in the early morning. Camden is a harbor town built on a river and has a panoramic view of Pennobscot Bay, cute little shops, etc. We drove back to Camden Hill SP and up to Mt. Battie and tried to get some photos, a bit foggy and rainy. Undaunted we continued onto Belfast (guess how it got it’s name) another harbor town with wonderful shops. Off we continued to Acadia NP for the night. The song “A Rainy Night in Georgia” doesn’t quite make it, actually it was pouring all night. It was nice to be warm and dry in our little cocoon, the Bothan. ... read more
