Ok, so I don't really mean so long suckers in the meanest sense. It is just a tribute to my good friend, Dan White (aka jackass, Sven, Abe, Wonder Bread, Too Tall, Stretch) . Dan came into my office during my last week at my mega law firm job and reminded me of a Simpsons episode where they build a monorail in Springfield. The monorail promoter (Lyle Lanley) had a little drawing, which Dan was kind enough to replicate on the white board in my office. The monorail promoter drew a picture of himself flying off to Tahiti with the Springfield population who purchased his monorail left behind, crying, with the term "suckers" on top. All gracefully done in fantastic stick figure drawing. But, there is a little so long sucker going through my mind as ... read more

The Windy city! 25th January 2009 This is hard work! Journal writing. I know this sounds like a lame excuse but it's actually hard to find th time! but I will do better. Chicago, first thoughts....deep dish pizza! hahaha Oh, and COLD! We decided to let bruce have a couple days off so we caught the train into town. Old school train man inside stamped our tickets. noisy and cold inside the train. men in London fog jackets and briefcases epitimise the US buisnessman. Chicagoans look at us funny. I think we look like tourists. better fix that somehow. Didnt really think chicago was all that great. sure, there were big sights to be seen. Wrigley field, sears tower lake michigan etc, but i dont know. Maybe the weather had something to do with it, maybe ... read more

We landed in Chicago in the evening of Inauguration Day...we braced ourselves for mahem but there was nothing going on!!! So we landed got our bags safely (phew!!) We had planned to get a cab but saw a shuttle desk and thought we would try and get to our hotel a cheaper way! The guy said if we ran we could catch him and get a ride to our hotel.....it was fine the driver was putting the bags in the back. There was only us and another guy...driving through the streets of Chicago was great...trees lit in fairy lights and the sidewalkes lined with snow. We dropped off the other guy first, the driver said that this was a very upmarket place in Chicago...the guys apartment looked very nice...a massive block with 6 apartments...each one had ... read more

Well, as we are getting closer to lift off, things are coming into place. We are packing up the condo, finished our last trip to the travel doctor so we are loaded up with Hep B, and are winding up at work. For those of you not living in Chicago, we do feel a bit like the city is kicking us out. It has been COLD - snowy, icy, -18 degrees. It has been inhumane. So, chasing warm weather for the next year seems like an appropriate thing to do at this point. See the picture on what we are leaving behind . . . Itinerary Update Although the goal was to play things by ear, our itinerary is coming together, in part because we have an increasing number of visitors meeting us along the way. ... read more

So me and dad had to return to the car to start frantically pulling out things that i thoguht might way a lot, theres goes my cute boyfit jeans and my hot river island jeans, gutted. Tourism - of the cheesy variety A recent article in January 2009’s issue of Travel + Leisure (“Opinion: In Defense of Tourism”) made me think about some recent travel experiences, and contemplate what I would like my outlook to be for next year. The article discussed the benefits and drawbacks of “touristy” locations and those people that avoid them like the plague when traveling. It starts with a debate between the author and a friend who stop at a famous cannoli shop in Boston. The friend states it is “a funnel siphoning the souls out of hapless tourists.” The author just likes the cannolis. The friend has a “counterintuitive conviction to boycott” the shop because it is “touristy” complete with photos of the Clintons on the wall and it is a venerable stop for tour buses. ... read more

Hola! I was awarded a $5,000 scholarship through the Gilman international scholarship program. :) When you receive this award, part of the deal is to find away to promote studying abroad and the Gilman award through what they call a follow up project. This blog will be a part of my follow-up project for the scholarship. It's going to be great so stay tuned. I'd appreciate it if everyone would leave comments and make it interesting for readers! I know these last two entries are boring, but soon enough I'll be in Mexico! 28 more days! Oh by the way, I got my visa on Wednesday. I thought it would take forever at the Chicago Mexican Consulate, but it was really quick and the lady was incredibly sweet. She studied at the University that I am ... read more
