September 1, 2010 People always picture Hawaii as a lush, tropical paradise. To our amusement, they couldn't be more wrong. The state has made a point of posting warnings saying how you could die if you take a wrong step. Some signs read like the warnings before roller coasters - this trail may not be suitable for people with heart conditions or for women who are pregnant. Others just say that if you do whatever it is they are advising against, it's your loss if the sea sucks you up. It really makes me wonder. Here are some signs we have seen so far: ... read more

August 31, 2010 Getting up early after a night of mai tais was a little difficult. Combined with the fact that Mom only got one cup of coffee, we were a little slow-going. Our snorkel boat was to launch at 6:45 a.m. and we were to meet it at 6:30 to check in. Ouch. Blue Water Rafting When I visited Maui four years ago I went on a snort snorkel cruise. We didn't have much time in the water, but it was so much fun I wanted to maxamize the experience this time. After some comparison, I decided that Blue Water Rafting was the best excursion. It is a little more pricey than others, but you are paying for a more private experience, with only 25 or so people, versus the 100 people on the other ... read more

August 30, 2010 Bye, Bye, Big Island Today we said Mahalo to the Big Island and Aloha to Maui. With our suitcases packed, we departed Noe's Nest and ventured back to Kona. Since we had been on every other major road on the island, we thought we would take the last unseen route of Highway 11, which runs along the south of the island. Well, if we had not taken this road, I don't think we would have missed much. Once we passed out of the green eastern side, the landscape turned into a sad version of the Yakima Valley. Dead trees, dead bushes, dead, dead, dead. I guess the nice thing was that there are few police and therefore no one to tell you to slow down as you pass through. Interestingly, instead of the ... read more

Fattest Nation on Earth Up bright and early, Reggie and I decided to go for a wander down to the supermarket to buy some essentials. We got five minutes down the road and came to a Huli Huli Chicken stand. Four Hawaiians were standing next to a huge barrel cut in half, flame grilling chicken on it and selling them for $8 a chook. What were we suckers? Of course we bought some car park chicken! Before we set off we asked them how far it was to the supermarket? "Oh man, that's far. Like a mile, mile and a half!" We walked away sniggering at the thought that if a mile and a half was far it pretty much explained their weight. The better part of an hour later we finally arrived at the supermarket. ... read more

From Waiuku to Kihei Without Spending a Dollar I got up at 9:30AM and was checked out at 10. Getting that key deposit back made me feel guilty as hell, as did me then leaving my bag in their free left luggage room. I'd had a trip to the beach, a kegger and a bed for the princely sum of $2.80 - the 10% deposit hostelworld charged me to book! Check in at the hotel in Kihei wasn't until 3PM so I went for a bit of a wander around Wailuku and listened to Lightspeed Champion's album "Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You", which I thought was apt. Wailuku's a little town inland with a view of the mountains on one side and one of the ocean on the other. The streets were fairly quiet, ... read more
