Hello from the beautiful island of Kauai. This is our 3rdstop in the Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is referred to as the Garden Island. We are docked on the east side of the island and everything is green and lush around the ship. However we did not notice it right away because we slept in until 8:00 and even then we didn’t get going very energetically at first. Last night was a lot of fun but it made for a couple of tired tourists. David brought some tea and juice back to the cabin from the Horizon Court and worked on yesterday’s blog for a while. Then we went up to the Horizon Court about 9:30 and had breakfast. A lot of people had morning excursions but we had wisely not challenged ourselves to head out very ... read more

Blog 36 Nawiliwili, Hawai’i, April 30, 2018 – Weather forecast: partly sunny, temperature 26°C, wind 8kts (3 Beaufort), 76% humidity – overnight wind 23kts – 2m long rolling swell Our arrival at the island of Kauai was a little delayed this morning and as a result our departure times for tours was out of synch, which annoyed a number of guests. Kauai is the oldest island in the Hawai’ian chain and by far the wettest. The island experiences 400 to 600 inches of rainfall per year. Even though there are eleven rivers flowing down from the mountains devastating floods do happen just like the one a month ago. Sugar production was the island’s primary industry up until a decade ago until the mills closed down, now tourism has taken over. Coffee plantations have taken over the ... read more

Cloudy - 75F Today is not starting out well. Not because of any occurrence but simply due to the fact that we slept until 9:30am. With no shore excursion scheduled, we had little incentive to rise early other than the reality that they stop serving breakfast at 10:30am. "Hurry! Get dressed. We have only minutes before they shut down the feeding trough." Oh, what have we become? Racing upstairs for what? An egg, piece of toast and some Rice Krispies? Well, coffee too. But it's a cruise ship and we struggle over the little things, like front row seats at bingo, reserving the lounge chair right in front of yours, just to preserve your view of the pool or bringing our own wine to the lounge shows, depriving the ship of $16. This is what keeps ... read more

Day 19 – Jan. 29, 2015 – Port of call: Nawiliwili, HI on the Island of Kaua’i – Weather forecast: sunny – temperature: 75°F/24°C – actual: 81°F/27°C – experienced mist then light showers leading to heavy showers on north shore We rose early as is our usual practice on a port day when we have an excursion booked and had our breakfast delivered to the room. Today we shared harbour space with the NCL Pride of America, the only ship to be permanently stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. Today we choose the shore excursion entitled: Hollywood Hawaii: Movies and Waterfalls which is scheduled to last approximately 6 hours. The description indicated that this excursion would be a comprehensive, in-depth and fun “movie-themed” sightseeing tour aboard a 25 seat capacity ‘Theatre on Wheels’ air-conditioned mini-bus. Throughout the ... read more

Aloha! We packed up to leave the North Shore and checked into our second resort on Saturday afternoon. In between our move we stopped at the Anini Beach to take a look around, we will likely be back for some snorkeling later this week (and to return to Wake Up cafe one more time). Later on we layed low due to some rain and soreness from our hike... we watched a Matlock marathon, ate pizza, and turned in early. This morning we woke up at 5 to make it to our Deep Sea Fishing excursion out of Nawiliwili. We got onto the boat for a four hour tour (a four hour tour.... Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, that started from a tropic port, aboard a tiny ... read more

This was by far the hardest day. After a quick breakfast from Java Kai headed to Edwards Boat Company. We spent the next 6 hours in the sun working on setting the rudder into position with building a lifting crane thing out of 4x4's, 2X4's, Plywood with come-alongs. Took lunch break when we got the rudder within 1/2" realizing we need another approach. Came back out to the boat and decided to lift the rudder to give a it a good cleaning and worked till 6:30 or so - The SUN cooked me. Lobster neck and I'm a bit sea sick - still feels like I'm on the boat. Yuck - tough day. Heading home tomorrow. Ready - miss my Tammy, Tayber and Sloan!!! ... read more

Tayber - your camera quit working today. It might have gotten wet when a rain storm poured through. Sorry - but we'll find a good replacement. I made it to Java Kai this morning - good coffee. One more day, then I come home. Got to do some electrical - installed the first light switch for the mast building lighting and power. Took 4X4 boards out to the boat, then Karaoke for dinner. Jody rocked through some hits and I met some other sailors - (tell Sloan, two of them were Pirates). ... read more

I got to spend some time reading this morning, calming moment. Then off Edwards Boat Company. Spent lunch and into the afternoon finalizing the purchase a small design for a solar system and two interior LED fixtures. When we come back in October, we'll get to install or see how it worked out. The Harbor Master's push is getting answered with paperwork that is getting sent off to the Coast Guard and ABS tomorrow (6/23). Later in the afternoon we went out to RAVE and took measurements on the keel and rudder, helping us organize the next day's action. Music: Beastie Boys = OK Mute Math = OK Death Cab for Cutie = Monday Morning Dispatch = Conman Best part of today was talking to Tammy on the phone a couple times.... read more

Today was a short day. Started with a free Breakfast in the Lobby and strait to the dock to head to the boat. Come to find out the day is based on an inspection of RAVE by the Harbor Master. That was more of a stress on progress than expected - Bureaucratic Gymnastics. Moved into Our favorite place to stay, The Beach Boy. Feels familiar, but still not as fun without my Wife...and kids. I walked over to the Coconut Marketplace to grab a to-go dinner. The place is almost a ghost town with empty tenant spaces everywhere. Our favorite pizza place is gone and a lot of tourism stores. Odd, but an aftershock of a bad economy. Lambert's Ice Cream is still there - thank goodness. Reading a business book about why businesses fail. Actually ... read more

This was a long day and progress on the project is almost unrecognizable. But in reality the success of today is a functioning cog in some great big machine.
