We drove this morning from the Charlotte area across the northwest corner of South Carolina to Hartwell, Georgia.. Watsadler Campground is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers on Hartwell Lake. This is a man-made lake bordering Georgia & South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo, & Seneca Rivers. Our campsite was nestled in a pine forest on the lake. We strolled through downtown Hartwell; lots of gift shops, furniture stores, and restaurants. One shop had a custom made kitchen island on rollers we really liked. It was fun window shopping!... read more

My first week and a half of camping in warmer southern climate was South Carolina and Georgia on the Savannah River. Then I drove 3 hours to Holbrook RV Campground, a military campground, about 1/2 hour from Savannah, GA. It is great. There is a large pond, hiking trails in the woods that dangle long threads of Spanish moss from their branches. Magnolia trees, short palm bushes, scented flowers line the lawns that are covered in large pine cones. Not many fall colors here, just luscious green foliage and damp green lawns, well trimmed throughout most of my drive. Especially on military grounds. My first question at check in....what animals do I need to be on the lookout for. The receptionist said not much, just snakes, alligators, boars, mountain lions....and squirrels. Ya, one of those does ... read more

Friday, September 30, 2022 We left at around noon from our home in Tennessee and made the 3 hour drive down to Helen. It was an absolutely beautiful drive. Despite the threat of rain coming from the remnants of a hurricane, we didn't see a drop of rain. In fact it was sunny and beautiful for the entire trip. The drive down took us past Tellico Plains and through the Smoky Mountains down to the small Alpine village of Helen, GA. It looked more of Bavaria then Georgia, especially with the many people dressed for Octoberfest in lederhosen and dirndls. It is a quaint town situated a long a river and nestled in the Georgian Blue Ridge mountains. Our condo was situated right on the river and within walking distance of everything in the small town. ... read more

Thursday 8th We slept in a little due to the time change from the last week, so we weren’t riding until around 9am. Out of Fenton Georgia, our route took us immediately onto a winding country road past the local golf club which was in pristine condition. Manicured tees and fairways and a Mansion of a Clubhouse. It looked very upmarket for a country town. This road took us through another forest interspersed with small groups of houses. The same mixture, some opulent mansions, ordinary houses and “trailer” homes. Mostly everything was pretty neat and tidy. Soon we were back on a gravel road and had shifted back to the time zone from yesterday so suddenly it was just after 8am. (GPS automatically changes times) We came to a small lake which was an idyllic setting ... read more

So my original that I saved unfortunately disappeared so I will have to start the original part from memory. It was a 4.5 hours drive from Durham to Savannah. We had planned over a year ago to go to Savannah and Hilton Head Island, but unfortunately due to COVID we had to cancel. We stopped at a Starbucks in Dillon. We thankfully got coffee, but if we had got anything else, it would have taken forever. We stopped on the way down to Florence. We forgot that we had stopped here on our trip to Charleston at a Starbucks, which ironically was right next door to the restaurant that we ate lunch at. The service was good and the restaurant was very clean. It was called Julia Belle's. The food was a casual seafood type restaurant. ... read more

We arrived in Savannah in the late afternoon. Our first stop was Top Deck a rooftop bar overlooking the river. The tour boats were heading out for dinner cruises. The day was warm and it was hot. Our next rooftop bar (we were working off a best rooftop bars in Savannah list) was Churchills. It is a British Pub as you can tell by the name. The outdoor terrace was relaxing and green with many plants. Since we had a bike ride on Sullivan Island and a drive from Charleston we were ready for a early night. Today we went across the street from our hotel and signed up with a hop on and off trolley. We decided to enjoy the entire 1 1/2 hour tour then get off on our second time around. The tour ... read more

We returned to High Falls State Park on our way out of Florida since we enjoyed the park so much during Spring Break 2022. The park is just south of Atlanta right off I-75, so it makes a great place to stop over when leaving Florida. I am surprised that we did not find this gem until earlier this year. The tumbling cascades have 2 trails one is an easy boardwalk to view the falls from above. The other trail is a figure “8” shaped loop along the water and into the woods which takes you down to the lower portion of the falls with a few nice viewpoints. The waterfall is visible from the road above along with the dam across the street. The campground is down the road from the falls. On the way ... read more

One question I frequently get is "How do you decide where to go?" I travel by choice, and I work remote so I can do this but nothing is incentivizing me to travel full time or guide me where to go work-wise. So I get to choose 100% where I spend my time. My 2 large overarching goals are to see all the national parks and spend time in each region/state of the US (I probably won't spend an entire month in every New England state lol!). Before embarking on this adventure I had spent my entire life on the west coast so a long term goal was to head East. Then winter came so the Southeast looked the most favorable. Now that spring is coming- Florida was getting a little warm so it's time to ... read more

With the skies finally open, my buddy and I decided to reconnect for the first time since the pandemic. We had planned to go to Morocco in March 2020, but the pandemic grounded our plans. Getting there is still a challenge, so we looked at a “Plan B” closer to home. Outside of Florida, I haven’t been to the southeastern United States, so we chose its unofficial capital, Atlanta. I must admit I knew very little about the city before this trip… During our nine days in the city, we explored a good chunk of it. As I grow older, slow travel is a better fit for me. Four things stuck with me after this trip. The first was learning about the history of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and ... read more

Sunday: A nice exploration and flat hike at crooked river state park. Probably the most confusing signs for their trails- I made accidental loops and got lost 3 times. How did I realize I was lost? I ended up back in the parking lot... 3 times!!! It was a cold but sunny day. In the evening I headed down to Jacksonville for a quick visit with my sister Denise. Tuesday: Nighttime walk on the beach. Really pretty with just enough light to see. The 1 picture shown doesn't do it justice- night photography is difficult. Wednesday: Copper was sorted into Ravenclaw house and got himself a ravenclaw jacket Thursday: Drove down to Jacksonville and had dinner with my niece (who I hadn't seen since I was 17) and her wife at a local pub. Friday: Had ... read more
