It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark, Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart, you try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it, you start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, you're paralyzed..."
So the build up to Halloween has been coming for many months now, with decorations on houses and advertisements for endless costumes and scary movies.
Being an Australian, I was somewhat deprived of the "trick or treat" phenomenon, as our country ACKNOWLEDGES halloween, but doesn't celebrate it as a community holiday- it is more commercial/more of an excuse for teenagers to throw a raging party, dress up like skanks and get extremely drunk. (Yes, I have participated in these parties in the past... :P)
It all started with Halloween Horror nights at Universal Studio's in Orlando. The drive there was about 2 hours, and by the time we got there the place was absolutely PACKED- among the 6 haunted houses available, we got into 2 only, both with wait times more than 45-60 minutes. It was also HOT and HUMID, and people everywhere. Although the haunted
houses were a disappointment, the scare zones were pretty cool- one minute you're walking down the street in universal just like everyone else, the next you're suddenly being followed by people in bloody and gory costumes and walking through spiderwebs and other various props that have been subtly placed.
Despite the disappointment overall, we did get to browse around the Universal store where I felt like a kid on christmas morning among the harry potter paraphernalia. There were real cloaks, prefect badges, broomsticks, chocolate frogs, bertie botts every flavour beans, wands (well, not REAL wands... that'd be so cool...) and other harry potter merchandise.
We finished off the night by buying lots of chocolate and lollies and then went home to bed.
On friday we carved pumpkins! Will, Adrit and myself made a trip to Walmart to buy pumpkins. Only $4.00 a pumpkin so choosing a good one wasn't an issue. Together, our pumpkins and Frances' pumpkin carving set made a fun hour and a half of cutting out faces and scooping the guts out of the pumpkin- Who knew the inside of a pumpkin was all gross and stringy? Not me...
(To everyone at home- Pumpkins are
seen as a dessert here: pumpkin pie, pumpkin doughnuts, pumpkin cakes, pumpkin latte's, PUMPKIN EVERYTHING except the thing that it really is- a vegetable. How odd?? William has never had pumpkin as a vegetable. Weirddddd)
The celebrations continued at Sam and Ange's, on the night before halloween. We all sat around, enjoyed Angela's lovely festive decorations and watched various scary/boring movies, including Hocus Pocus and a terrible movie about a guy that turns into a fish and starts killing lots of people. (?)
So anyway, on the day of Halloween Maeghan and Adam carved their pumpkins, while we sat around and waited for it to start getting dark. As soon as the sun went down, the doorbell started. At first, maeghan and I JUMPED up and ran to the door, only to find kids about 13/14 years old begging for Candy. I also received a date invitation from one of the younger boys but something tells me it won't work out...
After about an hour of answering the door and handing out candy.... it was OUR turn to go out in our costumes! We all dressed up in our childish costumes and roamed the streets, watching families trick
or treat (we were WAY too old) and enjoyed seeing all the little kids dressed up as fairies and cupcakes and ninja turtles :D
On our way back to the house however, a woman sitting on her porch practically begged us to come over and get some candy because she'd bought too much and had too much leftover- no problem for us :D that completed my halloween fantasy! I got to dress up AND trick or treat!
When we returned, it was time for the partying. While Adam and maeghan chose to have a quiet night at home watching scary movies, Will and I decided to go out to a halloween party. Zach's friend Trevor often has people over for various occasions, this was just another excuse to play loud music and have a few (too many) drinks. When we rocked up, we were not expecting to be a few of the only ones that did not dress up, but given the atmosphere we got away with it. Apparently, being the "australian girl" I was already in costume.... so I guess that means I looked foreign? Anyway, it was a great night, we played a few rounds of Beerpong
[url=[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_pong and sat around listening to music.
I stole the Luigi hat and moustache and wore that for a majority of the night, so technically I had a costume.
The great night was followed by a not-so-good morning, but I guess thats the price you pay for a great night... *cough cough*
ANYWAY, it was a great weekend :D
