The Sea Ranch is about 40 minutes south of Mendocino. We like to come up here and rent a home along the ocean. Very relaxing and there is a lot to do if you are active. Hiking, kayaking, golfing, swimming, wine tastings, whale watching. ... read more

After hearing that I had lived in 13 places by the time I was 22 a friend called me a vagabond. She was right. And that was before she found out that I was planning on quitting my job and heading off to hang out in my VW bus on the Southern Ute Reservation. Now having just reached the mid-way point of my life at 51, I ready to start travelling once more. Currently I'm in Thailand, but soon headed to Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Laos. After that I'll probably head towards India, Nepal, & Bhutan. Then most likely Turkey and perhaps Morocco. I hope you join me, vicariously at least, but physically in real time would be better. You know that your day job is over rated and actually quite boring. But, I understand if ... read more

Winehiking: Sipping into a Recession. Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino & Marin, Oct. '08 Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County We had planned this winehike since last May, when we had flown out from Miami to backpack at Point Reyes National Seashore. We spent the last two days of that trip up in Sonoma Valley and had joined the Landmark Vineyards Heritage Wine Club after being plied into submission by a very good Chardonnay. At the time we promised each other we’d return for their annual Heritage Days festival in late October. But my how times changed. Fuel skyrocketed. The Stock Market, well, the Stock Market crashed and the economy took a nose dive. I found my company (an airline) wanting me to take money to go away, so they saw the back of my he... read more

September 16: We enjoyed two hikes further up the coast (even though, after flirting with us briefly, the sun pulled the covers up and went back to bed). One hike took us to the intersection of the San Andreas fault and the creek that comes out at Ft. Ross, settled in 1812 by Russians who came down from Alaska looking for sea otters (pelts) (which they hunted up and down the coast to extinction) and food for their Alaska settlements. Once the otters were gone, and they found that coastal lands were not agriculturally rich, they sold out to a rancher named Call. The area became part of California in the 1840s. The action of the fault - the Pacific plate moving NW against the North American plate) - turned the creek in one area perpendicular ... read more

Sept. 9. Back from Sonoma - a diversion from our intended foray into bike-riding. We were headed for the bike shop in Sebastopol. After lunch yesterday at Alice’s Restaurant there (served by Alice herself, aka “She Who Must Be Obeyed”), we scoped out bike rentals in that town and set our sights on a ride today. But the fog that has returned to the coast persisted inland today, with a slight drizzle to boot. So we headed for Sonoma on a more gustatory expedition. We drove through ranches, orchards, and vineyards - in sun! Sonoma has a pleasing central plaza and garden anchored by a former city hall and surrounded by several historic Spanish buildings dating back as far as the 1820s when Sonoma belonged to Mexico. (Apparently the city declared itself an independent state for ... read more

A Bright Sunny Sunday Dorothy and I jumped in our rented navy blue Honda Civic (an upgrade according to our rental agent from Bulgaria) on Sunday morning to find "the Plaza". This was where we going to find the action in Sonoma, and breakfast. Even though we had a full kitchen in our rental house we were on vacation and wanted to have someone wait on us. Plus, we got in so late Saturday evening we did not have an ounce of breakfast food in the house. We found the tree filled plaza quickly because it was just three blocks down from "Furnished on First", our rental house. We settled on a quaint restaurant that had outdoor seating right in front of the building and the menu looked good so we sat down. We sat next ... read more

Late, late and late... that has been our story for the last two days. We made it into Sonoma late last night. 1:00 a.m. to be precise. We were SUPPOSED to be in at 4:00 p.m. We made it to Sacramento at 10:00 p.m. That's just six hours late. Let's go back to the re-cap of the momentous train trip. So my dad wanted to travel through the Rockies on the California Zephyr in December. I think, based on a fall trip with no potential weather issues, that I would NOT take a train trip through the mountains in December. Our train originated in Chicago, left on time, and in less than one states travels it already fell behind 1.5 hours. Oh well, that's the trains in America, right? By the time it got to Denver ... read more

After 2 straight days of camping and a close encounter with a slug, we were very ready to get to Sonoma and more importantly, the Inn at Sonoma. We woke up early, packed up the tent and supplies, and headed out. We made one stop to drive through The Chandelier Tree (pretty cool and worth the $5) and then went straight on to Sonoma. The ride seemed to take forever but was well worth it once we got to our hotel. We stayed at the Inn at Sonoma, a great little place right off the plaza. Our room had it’s own gas fireplace, balcony, and best of all, a hot shower. The innkeeper must have been holding her breath as she showed us around the place because we both reeked of smoke and who knows what ... read more

Some of you may have been seeing California in the news with quakes and forest fires but you should rest assured if you were worried because we are all fine. We left LA a couple of days prior to the quake and the fires…well, we have decisions to make based on the fires in Yosemite. The last time I wrote we were leaving Carmel and heading to San Francisco. Actually I am not sure right now where I left off in my writing since I am not connected to the internet so I think I will talk about Carmel one more time. Have any of you been to Carmel? Well, what a lovely little seaside city/town. There was definitely a Newburyport feel to the place. We were there on a Sunday as the shops closed and ... read more

This morning our destination was Healdsburg in the Sonoma Valley about 45 minutes away from where we stayed. I had been told this was a central area near a number of wineries. The town has a central plaza with upscale shops and cafes around it and a number of wine tasting rooms. I was more interested in seeing the wineries and vineyards than tasting the wine. After some advice from the Visitor’s Center, we visited Bella winery that had their tasting room in a “cave”. That was different. We never did taste their wine (cost $10) just walked around. Then we went to Ferrani-Carani Wineries. I had heard they had beautiful gardens and they did. We did taste there (I had a free tasting coupon from the Chamber of Commerce). The white wine was very good. ... read more
