Friday 21st June 2013 Left Wasco and headed east in hot hot sun towards the mountains inland of the central valley. We started to climb the foothills with no reduction in heat, around upper 90s,classic scorched ranch country. We followed the road through Woody to a small motel/restaurant where we were told by some other bike riders that we were indeed in the middle of a whole lot of genuine wilderness. The roads got steeper, twistier and the surface more bumpy and broken. We rode through the southern unit of Sequoia National Monument running low on fuel getting concerned 'til we found some at Camp Nelson, the most we've put in them so far! We then carried on to Lake Success where we camped for the night and recovered from a hard days riding. Saturday 22nd June Set off from the ... read more

Today we left Yosemite and drove to Bear Mountain Pizza to pick up our "step-on" Peter Hickey and have lunch, then on to Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. Peter led us through the sequoia trees to see the General Sherman Tree.... read more

Today was a great day exploring Sequoia National Park and Kings River Canyon. The sites were amazing at Sequoia National Park. The weather was a little chilly and rainy sometimes, but the views were spectacular. The trees are huge and beautiful. At some points we were above the clouds which made picture taking awesome. Tomorrow we travel up the road about 150 miles to the south entrance to Yosemite.. More great pictures to come..... read more

Our postings are late as we do not have Internet or cell phone access until we arrive at the hotel-we crash and have no energy left by then. This day we traveled to the Giant Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. It took over 3 hours from Barstow to get here, so we stopped on the way to have lunch at a neat little restaurant along the Virgin River. The restaurant is not impressive from the front, however it has large outside dining areas along the river which provides a breathtaking view of the river. We enjoyed wild caught Alaskan salmon burgers. After lunch we headed to Giant Sequoia National Park. Mount Whitney, which is 14,500 ft, is in the park but only visible from the Eastern entrance so we did not see it today. After ... read more

Day 6 - Lake Isabella to Sequoia to Lake Isabella, Distance Travelled 96 miles. The original plan for today was to take advantage of Lake Isabella and jet ski/ canoe/white water raft etc etc as the guidebooks suggested but sadly the lake is pretty empty at the moment after the snow failed to fall during the winter and the local agriculture continues to use the water through the hot, dry summer so with half the lake gone and the remainder so low there are trees and land sticking out from beneath it, we had to come up with plan B. The lady in the office recommended a drive up to the forest, "it's only about an hour and it's easy to take a motorhome up there" were her famous last words...so she sold it to us ... read more

Day 5 - Barstow to Lake Isabella, Distance Travelled 133 miles. Well we thought we were off to an early start with the alarm set for 8-30 this morning but upon opening the door we found that we were just about the only ones left in a campsite that had been packed with 40+ RV's the previous night! I just put it down to Shas's snoring! Still at least it meant the showers and loos were quiet! Yes we use the site facilities rather than the RV where we can, for 2 reasons: 1) there is much more room in a big camp shower (which have been spotless so far) than in the RV and 2) if you use the camp facilities, then that's fewer times you have to go through the fun and games of ... read more

Heading for Sequoia

We couldn’t wake up early enough so weren’t on the road to Sequoia until about midday as we also got stuck in yet another gift store. I wanted to go the King’s Canyon as we missed out on that last time. The drive in there was very long, very steep, and very windy. Even Bobby started to feel woozy. It was a lovely drive, but a little disappointing after all the effort we went to. The drive into Yosemite was more spectacular than that, and we had wasted a lot of time and petrol getting there and back. As it was we only just made it to the General Sherman Tree by about 5.30pm after a quick visit to the visitors centre. We were too late for the Big Forest Drive, which is only reachable by ... read more

It has been three days since the bus tour. At this time we have based ourselves in Lathrop, where Tita Fenny’s sister (Tita Liz) and brother-in-law (Tito Danny) lives. It has been a fun three days. But all things being transient, we now have to bid farewell to go to L.A., where Lola Vangie has been waiting for us since the end of the Alaska cruise. Before we head to southern California, we’ll do what most American families do, especially every summer – have a picnic in a park. With us 15 in our rental van and Tito Danny and Tita Liz in their car with Bear – their dog that looks like a tiger – we drive to the Sequoia National Park. This time there’s no guide to tell us where to go and no ... read more
