Happy New Year from San Fran
After the amazing flight over the Hoover dam and Grand Canyon, we had a well earned rest before hitting the Wynne hotel to see La Reve (a cirque de soil production- one of several on the strip). This was a water show that would have sea world in awe. Around 80 performers danced, swam and performed acrobatics back into the purpose built swimming pool in the dome shaped amphitheatre.
I must admit, even though it was impressive, it was a little too arty farty for my liking. But I was still happy to see a show on the strip and a well produced show at that.
Even though we were all very tired from the early morning rise, I told the crew that one thing they had to experience before flying out the next morning was “The Big Shot”. Think of Sydney Tower at the very top, attach yourself to a seat on the spire, on the countdown 3….2….1 it launches you at 4 G up the spire of 160 feet in 2 seconds. The feeling is like your being shot off the face of the earth. We were all quite awake
after that.
So we hit the Excalibur casino one last time, sitting at the pokies with a few bucks in it ordering Double Kaluhas and Vodkas for nix. Not a bad way to have a few cheap drinks in Vegas, especially when Daz and I hit the free spins and pulled out 40 bucks. My limit of Vegas was no where hit, so more travel money for me and less for Vegas :>
We had a nice flight out of Vegas to San Fran the next morning. Mai and Daz have really scored with the WorldMark and the RCI hotels… very impressed. The room even had a LCD TV, we were treated like an owner and not a consumer. I am looking forward to the next few hotels with anticipation. We were even provided with Cable internet in the room.
Well this blog is titled new years in San Fran so I better explain what we got upto.
On the morning of New Years Eve we hired a few bikes from Fisherman’s wharf (Recommended by Az, a great suggestion mate) and took off along San Francisco bay, riding the leg aching hills up to the golden
gate bridge. Crossing this famous landmark was awesome, with the city and Alcatraz in the background.
Once off the bridge, a steep and fast ride down the hill through the thin streets to Sansalito. Very posh, me thinks a few rich people live here. I wouldn’t mind.
After an amazing lunch, we caught the ferry with the bikes back to the city. Since it was around 7pm, we hit an Irish pub. But they didn’t serve Killkenny. What kind of Irish bar doesn’t serve Killkenny. After a few drinks we started a wander and stumbled onto Lombard St. The most famous street in San Fran, u know the one in all the movies with the zig zag because it’s so steep.
We walked up the street, a real leg biter after the bike ride, and found a Cable car waiting for us at the top. Well we jumped on and found out all cable cars were free during New years eve, the guy gave the brakes to Alissa and told her to hang on as we flew down the hill. We rode the cable car till it terminated. After departing the Cable car, we started wandering the
streets again, stumbled upon a restaurant at the top of a building in downtown San Fran.
There we were given a Balcony side table, ordered amazing food, were given free Champagne, whistles, party hats to ring the new year in. After that, we hit the bars again ending up at home in the wee hours of the morning. So all in all a great New Years…
This morning we visited Alcatraz, for 20 bucks we caught the ferry out and wandered around the island. For anyone visiting San Fran you don’t need to get a harbour cruise, just jump a ferry Alcatraz. An interesting landmark, but I really now understand why escape would have been so dangerous, even though the city was 1.5 miles away, the currents were huge. We could see the rips running out to the pacific real quick.
I’m currently typing this blog up on the plane bound for Vancouver. I’ll whack it up next time the Net is available with a few photos. We are in the city for 3 nights before we head to snowbound whistler, both Daz and I are quite excited about the record breaking snowfall they have had. Over
7 meters since the season began. Can’t wait, can’t wait.
Anyways, I hope you all had a fantastic New Year and keep the comments coming.
