Universal Studios is hands down the best theme park I have ever been to. Not only are the rides actually fun, but it’s in HOLLYWOOD so we got to see sound stages and sets!! The absolute first thing we did was head to Hogsmeade, the Harry Potter section of the park. I think it’s an exact replica of the village they used in the movie (or is it actually where it was filmed? Can’t seem to find that information anywhere) and it’s so cool!! We saw people lining up for something that didn’t have an obvious purpose, so of course we joined the line. It ended up being for Ollivander’s, the wand shop, where you go in small groups at a time and an actor (ahem, witch) will pick two little kids and get them to ... read more

Today we were to do the inevitable family thing and visit the Universal Studios. Given that that meant driving all the way back up to Hollywood again, we were beginning to question the logic of staying at Redondo Beach. Whilst it is a nice, safe place to stay, it is not exactly convenient for most of the places we wished to visit. When we met our friend and his family yesterday they had advised to get to Universal early and cover the Harry Potter ride and the Studio Tour before the crowds build up and the queues start to get out of hand. We hence got down to breakfast as soon as it opened and hit the freeways as early as we could. I know that we have only been in Los Angeles for three days, ... read more

We finally got out of San Francisco and started our journey towards LA. We had left it quite late to leave San Fran, so it was getting dark and we missed most of the views of the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway. Then it started to rain. We were a little disappointed, but carried on anyhow, taking a stop in Monterrey for a bite to eat. We had hoped to have a stroll around the town but the weather was so bad we just ran from the car to the diner and back again! We stuffed ourselves with burgers and of course mac and cheese. Back in the car, we continued to drive until we got to our motel in Pasa Robles. We were hoping to get out for a drink, but driving in, we ... read more

Today was the trip to Universal Studios. Much to Shirees relief, the trip there was freeway-free. Just a dash up Santa Monica Blvd again (Sheryl Crow!)...Jaime counted 5 Starbucks. Must make it difficult when telling someone where to meet. Although we've noticed with some stores they number them like CVS 5 and CVS 6. Smart. Parked in the Curious George parking lot, and got to US just before opening time. The inter web had suggested going to the lower lot first to avoid crowds, but we decided to do Despicable Me first, the head down there. Worked we'll, no wait on any of the first 4 rides. All these 4D rides are pretty cool, Despicable Me was Gary's favourite. Liam and Jaime liked Revenge of the Mummy most, Shiree liked Jurassic Park because everyone got wet. ... read more

Today we spent the full day at Universal Studio Hollywood. I would highly recommend Universal studios if your in LA. Universal is a studio meets theme park.We got to the park just after 10am and did the first studio tour of the day. We were told that it would be 45 mins- 1hr wait if you come back and do the studio tour later in the day so get in early. The studio was fantastic. They first take you through the back lots- they have many- some examples are new york sets, european backdrops, wild west etc. Desperate Housewives is filmed here on Wisteria Lane and we got to see the entrance to the street- (see photo). Movies such as Jaws, King Kong, The Mummy and War of the World were filmed here. I have some ... read more

On the 22nd January Bec and I flew Virgin Australia from Brisbane to Los Angeles direct. Having both had a less than enjoyable week we were relieved and excited to be going on holidays. The flight left around 11am and was possibly the longest 13 hours+ ever. Neither of us could sleep as it was daytime and we were sat near a guy who didnt reallly want to let us get up to pee. Food & flight attendants were a dime in a dozen but apart from that it was a pretty good flight and the entertainment system was really good for those who wish to fly Virgin Australia in the future. As we landed early the plane circled LAX Airport and the first taste of American culture was seeing a black and white American police ... read more

Hi, Day 3 in sunny, smoggy LA. Still getting over jet lag. Lovely hotel Hyatt on Avenue of the Stars. Room has great views of hills, downtown city. Buffet breakfast was great, limited food choices for someone with food intolerances, definitely no gluten free bread. Lots of sweet things even rocky road muffins. Had scrambled eggs and bacon and a Diet Pepsi. mark loves the OJ. I'm enjoying the bananas, after being without in Adelaide for so long. We're going on a tour to Warner Brothers Studios. Would have been a $70 taxi ride each way. Our hotel is near a Westfi ... read more

Blijft echt SUPER gaaf.

The day started off early...... And by early, I mean 3:30 am. I think Trish was up earlier. The flight from Yellowknife to Calgary at 6am was pretty uneventful. Got a little shut eye, but not much more. We then had 2 hours in the Calgary airport to wander around and catch breakfast before heading to Vancouver. You know, I've never considered Chilis for breakfast, but it did not disappoint. On to Vancouver, we head through US Customs. Customs was quick and easy. Interesting enough, in Vancouver you are not required to pick up your bag. When going through security and at the US border, there are digital images of your luggage. This is great! and gave me a glimmer of hope that our bag would continue the trip with us. I've got to say, the ... read more
