BLOODY RUN A fellow named Newman Haines Clanton was one of the first white settlers on the Gila River in Arizona Territory. He had come with his family from Port Hueneme in California, where he had attempted to settle in a model planned community being built there. Newman had an unruly son named Isaac that caused so much trouble in Port Hueneme that the Clantons were evicted from their property and forced to leave. Newman liked the idea of a planned farming community and attempted to build one of his own to be called Clantonville, situated in a desolate area along the Gila River, in what would eventually become Graham County. To attract settlers to the area Newman placed advertisements in several newspapers. The opportunity soon came to the attention of Brigham Young who responded by ... read more

PEGLEG WILSON'S Ike Clanton was kind of a strutting rooster, stringy and tough, and forever crowing when those within earshot better craved his silence. He was belligerent, and obnoxious and demanding and those most around him found it easier to agree with him than to dispute him. It enabled his influence to grow within his family and all who came under his influence paid dearly for it. In his whole life the only thing that Ike Clanton was ever good at was stealing his neighbor’s cattle. His life of thievery would lead to the killings of his father, Newman Haynes, his 19 year old brother, Billy, and his friends Frank and Tom McLaury. It would cause his brother Phin to serve a stretch in the Yuma Penitentiary. Ike’s brother-in-law, Eben Stanley, was ... read more

MAXEY A fellow named “Maxey” was a confederate brigade commander during the Civil War and the community of Fort Thomas was originally named in his honor by the community founder who served under him. The military, however, fell short of naming their fort after Maxey and that name gradually fell out of use. In March of 1881 a group of rustlers had just delivered a herd of stolen Mexican cattle to the army and were enjoying their leisure over cards and whiskey in Jack O’Neil’s saloon in Maxey. Among them were Curly Bill Brocious, John Ringo, Joe Hill, and Jim and Nick Hughes. There were of course some others of less notable repute. A local cowboy named Dick Lloyd was an acquaintance of Curly Bill from earlier days in New Mexico. He ... read more

It was Sunday morning quiet as we drove through Deming heading north up Hwy 180. We had been told by several people that we needed to see City of Rocks State Park twenty-some miles to the north. They weren’t kidding, it was spectacular with great boulders tumbled together in a fairly flat valley. And the cool thing was the campsites were tucked among the rocks. It was mostly dry camping (no hookups) but they had a few sites with hookups, but they were out in the open. It is definitely a place we’d like to come back and camp. At one campsite there was a female long-eared owl in a nest high in a rock cavity. We looked for the male, who is normally nearby, but never spotted him. From there we traveled on to Silver ... read more
