Ponderosa Campground in the Tonto National Forest was a lovely, quiet surprise. The ginormous signs warning of bear and rattlesnakes were a bit off-putting, but in the end nothing came of either. Not many folks - I suspect it is because schools are back in session and universities/colleges start next week. This is a great bonus to this stage of life - we are not constrained by the schedules of a youngster or the rigorous limitations of a school schedule. Enviably Bill could continue this trip indefinitely... Today's drive is all downhill. What that translates to is driving from the cool to the hot. Driving south on HW-177 we spot a sign that has been on the road since the mid-60's but somehow we never noticed. Tonto National Monument. Being in no hurry to move from ... read more

AL SIEBER Al was an ornery old Dutchman. In his long career in the Apache Wars he fought in more Indian engagements and killed more adversaries than Dan’l Boone, Jim Bridger, and Kit Carson combined. Al was born in Mingolsheim, Germany on February 29, 1844. His dad died in 1845 and after the Baden Uprising ended disastrously in 1848 his mom gathered up her 8 children and came to America. They settled in 1849 among other Dutchmen near Lancaster, Pennsylvania and then moved on to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1856. Minnesota was still a wild country then and was where Al honed his marksmanship and outdoor skills. Minnesota attained statehood in 1858. Due to age constraints Al was not able to enlist in the military for service in the War Between the States until the ... read more

APACHE KID Haskay-bay-nay-ntayl was a Western Apache born maybe in about 1860, and taken captive by Yumas as a child. In his middle teens he was freed from that captivity by the Army and became a street scamp around the military posts in Central Arizona. Soldiers started calling him “that durn Apache Kid”. The Chief of Scouts, Al Sieber, took notice of the kid, befriended him, and before long the kid had become a protégé. In 1881 the kid enlisted in the Apache Scouts. Geronimo was on the loose and raising hell and the Army was kept busy mostly eating his dust. They couldn’t even have done that if wasn’t for the Apache Scouts. Geronimo was hounded by the scouts to peace negotiations in 1882 and LT Britton Davis escorted him safely up to ... read more

Geo: 33.3958, -110.789This was a spur of the moment deal. The carpet cleaners were here at the house and we needed to go someplace while the place dried. Where to go? Someplace close and interesting---someplace we hadn't seen yet... Always a sucker for scenic roads, we took off east to Globe. While not what you'd call picturesque itself, the road there goes through the beautiful Queen Creek canyon. Bob says it's 80 miles of driving for 2 miles of scenery let's-don't-ever-come-here-again, and that's one way---but we learned something.Globe is the center of the copper world--so they say (the #1 producer for Arizona, anyway). After we left the canyon we came to a string of decrepit mining towns put together from garage sale left-overs. The towns were pretty yukky but the mines were Impressive---capitol I. You could ... read more
